Osborne Samuel (London) showed these works by Chris Ofili at Art Miami 2014. These portraits are watercolor, ink and pencil on paper. In years past Ofili has used elephant dung in his work-- specifically in a painting of the Virgin Mary. This pissed off former mayor (and current late night infomercial pitch man) Rudolph Guiliani and he tried to cut city funding for the Brooklyn Museum. I figure elephant dung is better than human dung but then I am a glass half full kind of guy.
Joking aside, Ofili is a Turner Prize winning painter. This series of nine portraits, Afro Muses: Harem 1 are stylized and almost childlike (so much of the best painters take cues from the art of children). A super article on Ofili from last year in the New Yorker.
