American Decadence (Codington County) Nate Burbeck's Places Unknown, runs from February 20 to March 25, 2014 at Anna Zorina Gallery (533 West 23rd St., New York). There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 20.
The show is of paintings from 2011 to the present. All the images are of quintisentially Americam locations but with a twist; a surreal element is thrown in to disrupt the viewer's expectations. There is a great deal that goes into the creation of these pieces. Burbeck is a mix of painter, photogrpher, draftsman and location scout. The preparation for creating these works includes examination of satellite images and trips to locations around the country after areas are identified. It combines old-school artistic technique with the modern technology. It is a fascinating process.
Burbeck graduated from St. John's University in Minnesota and was named as one of "Ten Artists to Watch," by the Walker Arts Center. This is his first New York City solo exhibit.
