Abbott was another woman who was part of the New York School of abstract expressionists. Just in this year's Expo Chicago there have been numerous female artists from (or connected to) the New York School. Many are well-known and prominent--now.
They had a much harder time than it seems like from our current perspective. A fascinating piece on this can be found at Ideelart (some of this piece can be disagreed with but it is, nonetheless, fascinating)
Abbot, who passed away earlier in 2019, often used brighter colors than this piece. She was a lifelong devotee of abstraction and did live to see her work recognized, although not on the level of her male counterparts. She is an artist who should have been better known in her time.
