Louise Nevelson's black wood sculptures are unmistakeable. They look like furniture but unusable furniture, furniture of some surreal Lovecraftian world. But these are not the only thing the artist created. Locks Gallery (Philadelphia) showed some work showing the artists multi-faceted work.
Nevelson was born in Russia but moved to America at an early age. Her first exhibitions were in the early 1940s.
Nevelson passed away in 1988 after over five decades as an artist. She was also known for her flamboyant dress and lifestyle;she was a colorful person. It seems a little odd she is often remembered for these solid black wooden sculptures.
