Bowleg and Marquis Kavi Gupta (Chicago) showed work by Alfred Conteh at Expo Chicago 2019.
Conteh, born in Georgia to an American mother and father from Sierra Leone, creates work with a unique perspective. He looks not only at African-Americans and their relationship to American society but the relationships within the African-American community and the broader African Diaspora.
While other artists do approach this? Conteh's perspective is particular. His approach is generational and broad. His portraits are of proud, even heroic people. The focus is always on the figures and not the backgrounds, Many times the backgrounds are only that, contrast. The figures are often rendered as statuesque and iconic.
They are realistic but they are representative of something almost timeless too.
