Africano, from Kankakee, Illinois, has work in the permanent collections of some of the world's most prestigious museums including: MOMA (New York), the Whitney, MOCA (Chicago), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Milwaukee Art Museum and many others. His work is also included in numerous private and corporate collections.
This piece is cast glass.
And while Africano is obviously a fine glass artist he is also a painter. Indeed his work is often somewhere between a what we traditionally think of a painting and sculpture. At a quick glance--and quick recall of work I've seen by the artist--he seems to paint individual figures in space. They seem in the process of "becoming." Becoming what I won't hazard a guess and it may be individual to the piece.
This piece from Minnesota Public Radio says his model is always his wife. The article is ten years old, however. It also states that he views his art as "meaningless." Read more HERE.
