Promontory Habatat Galleries (Royal Oak) showed pieces by Dustin Farnsworth at Scope Miami 2015. Basswood, plywood, poplar and other media go into making these enthralling, disturbing sculptures. As with most sculpture these really should be seen in three dimensions (there was a video but it vanished).
Farnsworth, a native of Lansing Michigan, grew up during the ongoing economic upheaval in his home state. There is something of that "weight of the world" on the shoulders of us humans in these pieces. He studied furniture design and there is also, in the structures above the disembodied heads, something of that. But it is a non-functional sort of "furniture."
These wood-based pieces are something unique and the product of a subtle mind (to say nothing of a skilled hand). Try to see them in person.
