Munataka is a native of California and her paintings and collage work bring together recognizable imagery, abstraction, patterns and referene literature viaual art, memories. Look at her pieces. Then look at them again closely or from across the room.
Her artist statement notes that she grew up in a Japanese-American household where items from her family culture mixed readily with images seen as quintisentilly "American." There is something of the proveribal melting pot in her work.
She holds a BA and an MFA from the University of California at Davis and is a full professor of painting and drawing at CSU East Bay.
