Paper Tigers was commissioned originally by the Brooklyn Museum. Fay Ku was born in the Year of the Tiger. But that isn’t the only connotation of the piece. It is also a play on the term “paper tiger” which apparently means the same in Chinese as in English. Paper tigers are less fearsome than the real sort.
Ku chose paper also because paper is often burned as part of funerary rites. The famous terra cotta soldiers of Emperor Shihuangdi are also an inspiration.
The individual pieces are made from handmade Japanese paper with silkscreen and archival adhesive. These pieces were shown by Uprise Art.
