The exhibit, the artist's third solo exhibit with the gallery, features 14 new paintings. Her technique is interesting. She mixes paint directly ON the canvas; pigment mixes and pools freely. It is a mirror of the natural world. But this isn't some messy hodge podge, Kirkconnell relies heavily on the grid in her work. It is almost mathematical. The release on the show says it is related to her experience in fiber arts--her grandmother taught her to weave and to knit.
Kirkconnell is originally from Texas but spent years in Mexico City. She has also worked as a fashion model, studied acting (and worked in film and TV, including the show, The Paper Chase). Many artists of not from the past also have background in theater and acting (to say nothing of fashion). If you are out and about? Be sure to check out this exhibit.
