Weems is both behind and in front of the camera in her work. She is a tangible force in these pieces. She uses historical sites, costumes and objects to reference social history (putting this in simple terms). Her work is magnificent and is truly art that makes you think--about issues such as race, gender, justice.
Weems, recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant," has been a teacher and exhibiting photographer for over 30 years. There is a retrospective at the Guggenheim now until May 14, 2014.
