Acquavella (New York) showed work by Miquel Barceló at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. This piece, Fuerte marejada, is mixed media on canvas. Barceló was best known for using unorthodox materials in his work. This piece does, indeed, conjure images of rough seas.
Barceló grew up (and studied art) in Franco's Spain. You will often see him connected with the neo-expressionist movement. Really? When you see a broad swath of work from the artist you will note that he fits into no clear "school" or "ism." His work transcends labels when you look at it as a whole. He is an ever changing artist.
