When you see the term "magical realism" tossed about they are referring to artists like Tomasula who use intricate realism contrasted with idealized, magical, scenes. This piece, When I Knew You, is oil on panel.
Tomasula has a BFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an MFA from Northwestern. Her work has been shown around the country going back over 20 years.
Beckman has had an even longer career with appearances in shows going back almost 50 years. He often worked painting figures but the painting here is a landscape. He also had an interesting painting method; he would paint, then use a razor to cut away layers and repaint.
This piece is startling in its depth and intricate detail. Check the close-up image of Small Last Plowing. It is magnificent.
