Expo Chicago Announces Shamim M. Momin To Curate In/Situ

3/4/2013

The second edition of Expo Chicago—Chicago’s major art show at Navy Pier—announced the curator for the In/Situ portion of their show. Shamim M. Momin, director, curator and co-founder of LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), will be choosing the art you see around Navy Pier, outside the booths.

That is what a curator does—chooses the art (a wee bit of a simplification). In/Situ is the art set up throughout Expo Chicago and last year it was impressive. Momin worked at LAND, which is a non-profit public art organization that deals specifically with site-specific art contemporary art. She has also worked as associate curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. That is just one stop on her resume.

Expo Chicago 2013, which is in September, promises to be more impressive than the first year. The event is in the process of making the time around their show a reason to visit Chicago in September.

Don’t worry art fans. It is not freezing in the Windy City in September. For more information head to www.expochicago.com.

Lauren Lancaster And Richard Rigg Shown By Workplace Gallery (Gateshead) At Expo Chicago 2012

Betty Lee by Lauren Lancaster &

The 4th Seige by Richard Rigg

Paintings by Lauren Lancaster were juxtaposed neatly with conceptual pieces by Richard Rigg in Workplace Gallery's booth at Expo Chicago 2012.

Lancaster's striking, poster-like paintings recall bygone eras in modern form. Rigg's work is the sort of art that infuriates some.

"That is just a FLASHLIGHT, lying on the floor." they shriek in indignation.

That's true.

But isn't it fabulous to perplex and anger people? It really is, admit it. I have followed perplexed tourists around the Georges Pompidou Centre or the Tate Gallery in my youth and what is more fun than that. I don't even care (personally) about the theory or thought behind the art. I like things that vex people.

Ted Gahl Pieces Shown By Dodge Gallery At Expo Chicago 2012

Ted Gahl, who received his BFA from Pratt and his MFA from RISD (pretty solid pedigree there), had work at Expo Chicago via Dodge Gallery. He lives in Connecticut.

Dodge Gallery are located in New York City and have been around for two years on the Lower East Side. They have space for two shows at a time and generally work with early and mid-career artists.

Find out more on gallery and artists like Gahl at dodge-gallery.com. Unlike many galleries they provide more than just an artist's CV. There are works, a brief bio and info on the gallery itself.

It sounds odd to read that I am sure but it is surprising the number of art galleries with few images and even less information on themselves and their artists.

Pájaro con Figuras, 1972 by Wilfredo Lam
Cernuda Arte always has some of the most amazing  Cuban art you can find at any gallery in the USA. There is never a piece in their booth--or presumably their gallery--that doesn't come near breathtaking.

Visiting their booth at any art show is always rewarding and you will find artists from all periods of Cuba's art history

Head to their website, www.cernudaarte.com.

Artists such as Wilfredo Lam rub shoulders with current painters like Irina Elén González or Dayron González. Rene Portocarrero and Roberto Matta are also frequently shown by the gallery (both in Miami and at art shows worldwide).

Titus Kaphar's work are designed to look like they are "falling apart." The canvases fold in their frames and add a 3D asppect to the work. They are pieces that are hard to capture in a still image--hence the video below.

Kaphar is from Kalamazoo, Michigan with a BFA from San Jose State and a MFA from Yale. He currently lives in Connecticut.

These were shown by Friedman Benda, NYC at Expo Chicago 2012.

Galerie Lelong (Paris, New York, Zurich) showed this remarkable sculpture by Jaume Plensa.  Plensa is from Barcelona which is a great place to be from whatever your profession.

No, the image is not distorted; it actually looks like this. It seems distorted, stretched in a way that seems unreal. And this piece, Awilda's World III, is on a smaller scale than some other work. There seem to be more than one of these and it is possible I missed on the "III."

Plensa has worked in France, Germany, USA, England, Spain and Belgium. He splits his time between Paris and Barcelona.

Find out more about Plensa at jaumeplensa.com.

Galerie Lelong's NYC office opened in 1985 and moved in 2001 to Chelsea. International contemporay art is the gallery focus and the represent artists and estates from Australia, Europe, South America and the United States. The gallery has also been a strong supporter and has presented exhibitions by some of the most important figures in Latin American art.

This mystery painting was at the Corbett Versus Dempsey (a Chicago gallery) booth at Expo Chicago. Normally when I didn't get the name of a piece or the artist I don't post.

But this is cool.

You can peruse more on at the Corbett Versus Dempsey website.

Yoko Ono, Naim June Paik, Shown By Carl Solway Gallery At Expo Chicago 2012

Years ago at an exhibit at the Whitney I saw Yoko Ono's Play By Trust. I would be lying if I said all the art at that exhibit wowed me. But this piece, to me, was memorable. Play By Trust was shown by Carl Solway Gallery.

I find a piece of wood with a nail in it that was hammered by celebrities neither moving nor clever. But this is. I want to play again with this set---with Gary Kasparov.

Also show my Carl Solway Gallery was a piece by the late Naim June Paik, Heart Is The Question. the piece is an acrylic painting, on canvas, enclosed in an antique television cabinet. Paik was a a fine video artist, in addition to working in other media. He is most known as a video artist.
