Also be sure to check them out on the Lovespirals Website.
The lovely Angie Bee and Ryan Lum of Lovespirals are graciously allowing folks to download 7 free remixes from the Love ep. You can find these at Last FM. For those not in the know, lovespirals have been around (in one of two incarnations) for getting on 20 years. These days they produce an easygoing, jazzy electronica. But, as usual, I am not going to get too much into describing their music. Why should I ? You can listen yourself.
Also be sure to check them out on the Lovespirals Website.

Toronto group, Bishop Morocco (aka Jake Fairley and Jim Sayce) are poised to release their self-titled first album (damn…I already wrote it, can’t change it to “eponymous”) September 14 in the USA on Hand Drawn Dracula. A single, Last Year's Disco Guitars, is linked below for your perusal and some remixing will be done soon as well. There is also a tour in the works and soon as that is all sorted out we will link to that info! The Airborne Toxic Event will release a documentary about their performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The DVD, All I Ever Wanted: Live From the Walt Disney Concert Hall, comes out in the USA September 7, 2011. The DVD will be a behind the scenes look at putting on the show, the last of 354 shows the band played in support of their debut record. Yes, yes, I know this is a MOVIE but I am not going to put music movies in the movie section anymore. It goes against my sense of order. The band’s second CD is due out early next year and expect them to tour incessantly for that one as well. I have no official pronouncement to that effect but it seems likely! One of the longest, still-standing and best music magazines out there (maybe even the only one that is any good these days) is Big Takeover. And they have a new website. The website has been around for 13 years but (having been relaunched once before in 2004…) it is now new and improved.
www.bigtakeover.com The categories are now easier to navigate and include; recordings, concerts, interviews and top ten. The site will also include an archive of shows from big takeover on breakthruradio.com. I have been a fan of this magazine for more years than I can count. I haven’t bought a music magazine for I have NO idea how long—excepting only Big Takeover. Support them in print and online. Arcade Fire announced, at their recent show in Quebec City, that they will match donations made to the newly founded KANPE, up to a million dollars. Win Butler told fans at the show to “Please take our money from us.”
I go on a lot about bands being selfish pricks. When they make donations they make rather token ones. BUT...a million dollars? Please DO check out Kanpe, an organization designed to help the most vunerable in Haiti self-sufficient. Haiti is still there, still needs help and, as the Miami Herald has been reporting, a lot of the aid promised by governments has not been delivered (promises, promises). Kanpe’s partners in this include Partners in Health, a long standing health organization in Haiti and micro-credit specialists Fonkoze. To donate $5 text STAND to 30333. And go to the KANPE website, www.kanpe.org for more information. Philip Selway of Radiohead-fame is releasing a solo record August 31 from Nonesuch Records. I had this info for awhile so I am sure everyone already knows about it.
But you don’t know that I very curious to hear this recording. It was reportedly spawned when Neil Finn had a gathering of folks ranging from Johnny Marr to Lisa Germano to Sebastian Steinberg to Selway and Ed O’Brien for a charity record. The result, 7 Worlds Collide was released under the name Neil Finn and friends. There is more to that story but I am sure you can find it elsewhere. Suffice it to say that was the germination of Familial. You can pre-order this now I believe. For more information head to the Nonesuch Records Website. Benjy Davis Project, still in the midst of a tour, are also offering a free digital sample entited Paper Trails (this is for a limited time). The sampler has 11 songs from a variety of Benjy Davis Project recordings as well as one unreleased track. You can find it here THIS LINK via Amazon.com The band has been on the road since the March release of Lost Souls Like Us (I am afraid you have to BUY that one cheapskates). I also noticed that the tour is sponsored, coming in the fall, by the Abita BEER company. If I knew you could get BEER sponsorships I might never have quit doing music myself. Keep an eye open for a beer-soaked Benjy David Project in the fall on a SEC tour (hitting all 12 universities including, no doubt, the home of label-mates Sister Hazel and my alma mater, the University of Florida) as well as multiple performances at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest and Voodoo Fest. For more head to the Benjy Davis Project Website. Not only do they have a new video for their track, This Is Yours, out but Debutaunts announce new tour dates and the release of their debut, Why Can’t We Have Fun. The record is due out August 17. Ahh, the eternal question, very similar to one posed by Descartes. Or was that Cyndi Lauper? The band is based in Atlanta and Gainesville, Florida and recorded the new tracks at Glow in the Dark studios in the former. Their tour begins on August 13 at Vinyl in Atlanta. For more info on the tour head to the Debutaunts Website. Adam Haworth Stephens of Two Gallants is releasing a solo recording, We Live On Cliffs, this September on Saddle Creek. You can get a copy of the first single, The Cities That You’ve Burned, from that record now at www.adamhstephens.com.
Stephens heads out on tour (with a 4-piece band) to support the record on August 7. This mini tour will consist of nine dates and begins in Salt Lake City. This isn't actually NEW so I am not sure it is NEWS but Bloodshot records posted a link to this release from Charlie Pickett & the Eggs, one of those bands you have to wonder WHY they were never a huge deal. Maybe they sounded to rough and rock n rolly in an era when everyone looked like the Thompson Twins? Who knows. But South Floridians should know about him and you should all head on over to the Bloodshot Records website and buy Bar Band Americanus for $9 and some change. |
Constantly Consuming Culture--The Waterfront show crowdfunding effort now live. Shows in Miami and Chicago. Help us out. You can own the painting above.
