SpokesBUZZ, a music nonprofit out of Colorado, recently concluded their multi-city Bandswap series. Essentially the program too bands from Denver and Fort Collins and partnered them with bands in other cities who then "swapped" shows. Folks who don't work in music take for granted bands touring and showing up in your town. But the truth is a lot of local/regional bands have a hard time getting booked outside of their homebase. It can be a truly painful experience.
This program aims to help withthis but also to help get audiences out to these shows, develop the local music economy and grow the following of bands and performers. Every city has its own sort of "vibe"--not to sound like a hippie but it is true. Even bands playing within the same genres have vaguely differing sounds based on a city or a region. Programs like this that help stir the pot are great for everyone.
This year Asheville (NC), Chico (CA), Denver, Fort Collins (CO), Lafayette (LA), Madison (WI), Nashville, Tenn. and Portland (OR) all participated. Next time out? even more cities will be involved. The program is even looking into going international.
