You like the blues? How about Songhai Blues? Don’t know who the Songhai are? You have a computer…search (I majored in African History at University….so I know…good choice for a degree don’t you think?).
Sidi Touré hails from Mali and his new record, Sahel Folk, comes out on Thrill Jockey January 25th. The Sahel is the region between the Sahara and the more tropical regions below. It is the land of nomads, ancient kings, centers of learning (Timbuktu) and varied and rich cultures. The song above, Bon Koum, is off that record and you can listen above (it premiered on Pitchfork).
Even better news is that Touré has a booking agency and plans to hit U.S festivals and clubs are being sorted out right now. When info on Touré first started flowing I wondered if he would make it out of West Africa. Glad to hear it is happening. We wrote some on the new record earlier but not sure if we had samples. Keep an eye out for this and we hope to have tour dates later as well.
