Sidi Touré is from Mali in Northwest Africa. He was born in the city of Gao but another famous city is also in Mali--Timbuktu, which was, and remains, a revered bastion of higher learning, despite being in Africa and far from the USA. But I digress.
Touré, from a noble family, had to challenge some societal norms to become a singer. Nobles were sung ABOUT, they did not sing. It is like a Kennedy announcing they want to be a garbageman. But Touré stuck to his guns.
Sahel Folk is his second release and his first with Thrill Jockey. The record is a collection of West African artists, some of whom have never left their hometown, coming together and recording.
