I always begin to write about Jon DeRosa—or think about it—and stop. I want to say more than I have space for. I listen to his ep, Anchored, from 2011, constantly. I started to put together a “best of 2011” list because of that release but I couldn’t think of anything else to put on the list except Tree of Life.
His music has influences (or similarities to..perhaps not influences) ranging from Nick Cave to Eddie Fisher. These songs call to mind the crooners of the late 50s but they have a musical palette that is thoroughy modern. They also tend to be much darker in tone—although there is often a subtle humor in them. Not “ha ha” but an ironic sensibility.
This is a record you need to own. If you love Sinatra’s Only the Lonely, you will love this. If you love Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads, you will love this. Hell if you love music you will love this.
