Jimmy Cliff has a new EP on the way, his first studio work in seven years. The record, comes out in November and includes a cover of a great track by The Clash, Guns of Brixton (sung by Paul Simonon). You can hear the track at Stereogum HERE.
A full length effort will follow the EP in 2012. It is sure to win a Grammy since Cliff is the only reggae performer any Grammy voter has ever heard of (not a knock on Cliff but on those esteemed music awards). Cliff has always been a fine songwriter, singer and musician. Years ago he put out some rather pop records that seemed somehow off to someone looking for “pure” reggae. Go back and listen to those efforts (from the 80s like Hot Shot) and realize Cliff wasn’t the one with tin ears….it was you (ok, ok. I am talking about ME).
The record is produced by Tim Armstrong who has worked with Rancid, Operation Ivy, The Transplants and others. It sort of sounds like a production match made in heaven. Cliff is a legend obviously and this just SMELLS like a must have recording (or recordings).
