Kaki King is heading out, all by her lonesome, to tour the US of A. Her first stop is a gig at MOMA in NYC and she later hits Yoshi’s in San Francisco. King started out playing on the street in NYC and has, since then, worked with the likes of John McIntyre, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder. Her latest record, Junior, was released on Rounder last year. Keep an eye open for her tour. She is playing in a lot of great places to see shows. photo by Kristianna SmithDon't Do It by Sharon Van Etten Sharon Van Etten’s tour has already started. I believe I have posted about it before. BUT , just in case I was drunk and didn’t, I am posting it again now. She has some interesting openers on these shows. One is Sebastian Blanck who I interviewed but haven’t POSTED anything with yet. He is a super singer songwriter and an artist. I am going to get his interview done soon.
But back to Ms. Van Etten. She is working on new material with Aaron Dessner of The National. Check out her track, Don’t Do It, above. And get out to see her live is she is in your town. Van Etten is one of the real ones. I am not kidding. There is a lot of crap out there. I hear it…sometimes I see it….so when I hear goodness? I can get a little over the top. Want to make something of it? Meet me in the parking lot, punk. You can hear their track, Wedding Bells, by clicking HERE. This is the first track of the record. The PR came with a description of what the song is about but I will just leave it to you crazy kids to figure that out. Suffice it to say that it is for all you lovers out there. You can read a Q&A with Heidecker at New York Magazine’s Vulture Blog. Bruce Cockburn’s 31st studio record, Small Source of Comfort, is out on True North Records. He will be doing a North American tour beginning March 24. The tour begins in British Columbia and ends in Seattle.
Cockburn’s adventurous folk, protest, rock music has been sometimes an angry howl against injustice or personally soulful. This record consists of songs written while traveling to places ranging from San Francisco to Brooklyn toe the Canadian Forces base in Kandahar, Afghanistan. One thing Cockburn isn’t is pedantic or humorless. His works have always included a good amount of whimsy and understanding. A number of the shows on this tour have already sold out. You can get a free download of the track HERE. Or watch the video below. There are tons of remixes from various folks including Robotaki, Shadow Dancer, Max Tundra, Edwin Van Cleef, Cosmonaut Grechko and Popular Computer. I hate the term “Americana.” There is no rational reason for this, it is similar to how I hate it when people use the word “tasty” to refer to anything other than food (I kind of hate it even then). Nonetheless, music labeled Americana is often worth a listen.
Riley Etheridge Jr. is one such artist and he has a new album, Powder Keg, on the way, March 8, 2011. He is a signee to Rock Ridge Music. A South Carolina native who calls New York City home now he plays a blend of country, rock and blues. Powder Keg features many of the same folks who played on Etheridge’s debut record, Things I Used to Know (2010). I am not listing names but it is a super collection of studio and touring (and production) hands. For more info head to www.rileyetheridge.com A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve Scattered Trees are from Chicago. How did I hear about them? From a NYC PR company. I need to get out more. The band’s first full-length, Sympathy, comes out April 5 on Roll Call Records/EMI. Check out a track from the release, the cheerily titled, A Conversation About Death on New Years Eve above. The album is, in part, about and inspired by the death of lead singer Nate Eiesland’s father.
The band is playing in Chicago January 21 at Schubas. Schubas is one of the best little venues in . Chicago for my money. Check out Scattered Trees there this week if you get a chance. Noah and the Whale, from London, will be releasing their third record, Last Night On Earth, March 15 on Island Def Jam. The band have been working on the record since January of last year. The record was produced by singer, Charlie Fink and Jason Lader who as worked with Julian Casablancas and The Mars Volta.
There are various guests on the record including keyboardist Adam MacDougall of The Black Crowes. To listen to the track, L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N., click HERE. As much as I hate iTunes is as much as I love Metric. So while I usually trash any iTunes-centric press release I read this one (yes, I know, me ignoring them means their empire will soon fall). January 4th saw the release of the Metric iTunes Session. This is 8 tracks and an interview that has acoustic tracks, band songs and a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s Expecting to Fly. Christopher Mills, who directed the band’s fabulous video for the song, Collect Call, also directed this one. Oh and why do I hate iTunes? I know you want to know. Here is an example;I just want to put music on my device and listen to it-- Not have to authorize everything. And then, even when I click the button to erase, so I can just put the stuff on again later they WON’T LET ME. It is like going into a store and having a security guard follow you around with a night stick. So, fuck you iTunes. But if you have less hostility go buy the Metric iTunes Session as I am sure that is great. |
Constantly Consuming Culture--The Waterfront show crowdfunding effort now live. Shows in Miami and Chicago. Help us out. You can own the painting above.
