The Ancient Astronauts are a production and DJ due from Germany. Kabanjak and Dogu are the two minds behind these pre-history space travels. The music is all over the place and they have remixed or worked with a list of super duper talent (including Ladybug Mecca of Digable Planets, Fort Knox Five, Kid Loco and a slew of others).

Yeah, yeah, YEAH, Pitchfork doesn’t need ME to help spread the word about their festival, which takes place July 15 til July 17 in Union Park in Chicago. For those who, oddly, are not familiar, Pitchfork is a fest catering to “cutting edge” music. I might quibble here and there if some of the bands are cutting edge (I mean Yoko Ono played a few years ago) but that is neither here nor there.
Mostly the fest brings together bands you know from the past, who are hot now and who will be hot in the not too distant future. For me they bring together a better mix than most festivals. Single day tix will set you back $45 and three day passes are $110. More info? Head to the Pitchfork website, www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com. Muzzle # 1 The Bloody Beatroots Death Crew 77 have a record of remixes, Best of..Remixes, out now on Dim Mak. Sir Bob Cornelius (we have no idea what the Knighthood is for…is there one for remixing?) started the group back in 2007 and has remixed a slew of notables (The Chemical Brothers for one).
But is this a DJ project? A Rock Band? It has been both and is more than either maybe. You can decide when you listen to Muzzle # 1 above. Hopefully they will tour again soon. Drive A are heading out to support new record, The World In Shambles, Revolt Tour. This tour includes Hollywood Undead, 10 Years, New Medicine and Drive A.
Drive A’s new album, The World in Shambles (the band’s second album) is out on Dead Conflict Records. The tour is apparently sponsored by House of Blues and begins April 6. I am not going to say anything bad about the House of Blues, Disney’s answer to ROCK. Find out more about the tour www.therevolttour.com. Drive A has toured with Alkaline Trio, The Used, Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine and Escape the Fate. Ok, you do not HAVE to love them. Anyway, the group is heading out on tour and releasing their debut record, The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion, on April 19 digitally and May 24th on CD.
The music is electro, funk, rock and focuses on the story of a French Horn Player (as you might expect) The band is playing at SXSW and in Asia opening for MGMT. The upcoming US tour, opening for Yelle begins April 17 You can also download a sampler of the record HERE. Anthony and the Johnsons Swanlights EP comes out on 10 inch vinyl and digitally April 26. A CD version will be out on the heels of that. Actually the vinyl will be available on Record Store Day, April 26.
The EP includes a remix of the title track by Oneohtrix Point Never and two b-sides. There is also a video for Swanlights directed by Sara Hegarty (sister to Anthony). The band will be performing at the TED Conference in Long Beach on March 2. TED is a nonprofit that aims to bring people together, spread technology and bring people together in entertainment, design and tech fields. If you are confused by the EP release, yes, the band did release an album of the same name last year. We do not think they will release a third Swanlights record however. There was a special edition of this with a hardcover book with Anthony’s artwork. Acting Hard Captain Ahab, of Los Angeles, is Jonathan Snipes and Jim Merson. Snipes produces, records, writes and performs the music while Snipes dances. They tour with frequency and have played with a slew of interesting artists.
The rest of this press release read like it was written by a hippy William Faulkner, if you can imagine such a thing. I am not sure this is a bad thing if it is evocative of the music. It asksrhetorical questions such as “Do you love Powermetal even though it is just for thirtysomething LARPers”? or “Do you like shaking your ass to some Electro-Clash even though your neighbor scoffs because you forgot it’s called Nu-Rave now.” No, my neighbor doesn’t but then he is a 50-something Jehovah’s Witness. I say these questions are rhetorical mainly because they do not seem to really require an answer. The band’s new album is called The End of Irony…although the release equates irony with “guilty pleasures”…And I am not sure what that means. You should read the release. Go HERE. I am including one track provided (Acting Hard). Have a listen. Really, don’t be scared. There are more tracks on the website above. A tour is also imminent. Their press release says they were compared to someone else (critics do that) but won’t say who. You should probably guess. I suspect it isn’t the Starland Vocal Band or Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Beyond that, I cannot hazard a guess.
The new record, Tunnel Blanket, is, however, described as delivering “epic-in-scope soundscapes” which sound promising. The track above, Communal Blood, is certainly promising. Tunnel Blanket comes out on Suicide Squeeze Records on May 10 (and on Monotreme in Europe). The band will be playing at SXSW. The Shit Robot Show is hitting the road. This live audio-visual extravaganza will feature Shit Robot performing from inside a custom screen with custom AV to accompany. The debut, fittingly, comes at another extravaganza, SXSW. He will also be opening for two of the LCD Soundsystem Terminal 5 shows (which curiously also sold out in an hour..wonder how many of THOSE tickets are on sale via scalpers..oh..btw..DEATH TO THE SCALPERS…Was that too harsh? How about INGROWN TOENAILS TO THE SCALPERS!)
February 21 saw the release of a limited 12” on white vinyl via DFA Records. It features remixes of singles, Tuff Enuff and Take Em Up by Michael Mayer and John Talabot. You can buy the single HERE or check out the originals on Shit Robot’s debut full-length, From The Cradle To The Rave. You can listen at Pitchfork. They are at pains to assure that this is not a Joan Jett cover. Not that there would be anything wrong with a Joan Jett cover. The track was produced by Delta Spirit’s Kelly Winrich.
The band is planning a full length in the summer. The band has toured with Delta Spirit and Dawes. Upcoming shows are below. You can download the track above HERE.
