Bicha Gallery , 7 Gabriel's Wharf, South Bank, London, present a new exhibition investigating transforming landscapes by Clinton De Menezes from August 2 to 26, 2012. De Menezes is a South African artist who works in a variety of medium.

There will also be an opening, with the artist, Thursday, 2 August 2012, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

De Menezes works in painting photography and mixed media construction. The work that reaches out and grabs you by the throat are those showing “views from on high” (my terminology). His work has grabbed my attention, I do not recall where I first saw it but it was mixed in with other work held by galleries.

This is his first solo exhibition at Bicha and those in London would do themselves a favor by taking a look. This exhibition, Passage 2012, is three ongoing projects exploring degeneration, transition and regeneration.

Find out more at the Bicha website.

New Yoruba Pieces At Primitive In Chicago

7/31/2012

First of all do not get on ME for the name of the gallery juxtaposed against these Yoruba pieces. I do not think the Yoruba people are primitive. I am likewise sure the folks at Primitive Gallery do not think that either. It is the name of the gallery, not an editorial comment (I write this after previous messages!)

The piece shown is a Yoruba beaded crown. These were worn by Yoruba kings (sort of like Greece the Yoruba had a number of kings ruling city states….but I studied all that a long time ago so I have no more details for you).

The crowns are covered with two symbols from Yoruba culture—birds and mysterious faces. The faces are a representation of the creator god, Oduduwa and the birds, called Okin, represent women. Apparently the king, by wearing the crown, acknowledges that he cannot rule without the support of god…and women. This particular piece sells for $1995 (on sale from August 1-5).

DeBilzan Gallery, 224 Forest Ave, Laguna Beach, California, presents a joint exhibition of work by William DeBilzan and Miguel Paredes beginning July 19 and running to July 29.

There will be an artist reception on Friday, July 20 from 7 to 10 p.m.

For DeBilzan the use of color is key. His work is in public and private collections around the world. If you ever get to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai you can see his work there (tallest building in the world). DeBlizan currently lives in Delray Beach, Florida and has a gallery there too. Find out more at www.williamdebilzan.com.

Paredes, originally out of New York, but now one of the leading artists in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. His work blends numerous styles—street art and pop art mixed with animation and more.  If you have been to any notable Miami art event you have surely seen his work. But there is such variation you might see a piece and another piece and not recognize them as from the same artist.

Judy Saslow Gallery, 300 West Superior, in Chicago have a new exhibit opening Tuesday, July 17. The gallery mostly shows self-taught artists but also shows emerging artists that don't, strictly speaking, fit into that category. They are a good gallery to put on your list of "places to visit" in Chicago.
