Lisa Stefanelli's The High Road and René Treviño's Centrifuge runs from February 7 to March 22, 2014 at Pentimenti Gallery (145 North Second St., Philadelphia). There will be a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, February 7.

Stefanelli's show includes paintings, photos and installation work. This is the artist's first with Pentimenti. Her paintings come from a process using automotive paint and enamel (and you thought fingerpaint was messy). She also works in photography--she manipulates what he sees outside her window.

Treviño's Centrifuge deas with celestial bodies and astrology. The forms here are mandala-like. The work (often istaken for prints) is actually hand painted acrylic on mylar. The meticulousness is astounding.

NanHai Art (520 Broadway, Millbrae, CA) present Sublimity, a solo exhibition of recent works by Hou Beiren from February 22 to March 29, 2014. There will be a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 22.

The exhibit featurs 25 paintings created by the 97 year old painter between 2010-13. Beiren uses both Chinese and Western traditions in his work--Chinese brushwork and Western Abstract Expressionism. The title of the exhibit refers to the ultimate standard by which Chinese masterpieces are judged. A work is ranked by how it reveals the innate spirit beneath physical form. Present material realism isn not part of acknowledging a work to be a "masterpiece" in this tradition.

Beirne was born in Liaoning, China and was educated in Japan. He currently lives and works in Los Altos, California.

Carrie Mae Weems third solo exhibit at Gallery Paule Anglim (14 Geary St., San Francisco) opens March 19 and runs until April 19, 2014.

Weems is both behind and in front of the camera in her work. She is a tangible force in these pieces. She uses historical sites, costumes and objects to reference social history (putting this in simple terms). Her work is magnificent and is truly art that makes you think--about issues such as race, gender, justice.

Weems, recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant," has been a teacher and exhibiting photographer for over 30 years. There is a retrospective at the Guggenheim now until May 14, 2014.

Garis & Hahn Present "Dream Battles" By Zefrey Throwell From February 28 to March 29, 2014

Picture
Garis & Hahn (263 Bowery St., New York) present Dream Battles by Zefrey Throwell fro February 28 to March 29, 2014. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday February 28. This is the artists first solo show with the gallery.

In this new work we see duels between infamous and/or iconic personalities of the past century (Oscar Wilde vs. John Wayne, for instance). Some of the battles are less whimsical. The series was inspired by recent visit by the artist to Auschwitz/Birkenau. In part these pieces were his way of healing a personal crisis of faith--he took the horrors and put them in opposition to other figures of a less sinister variety.

Scores are tallied for these "battles" at the bottom of the paintings.

Throwell is from Oregon and currently lives and works in New York City.
