Matthew Cox and Andrew Graham are each the subject of solo exhibits at Pentimenti Gallery (145 North Second St., Philadelphia),

Cox's Heartthrobs, Avatars, Playboys and Warriors consists of his unique embroidered x-rays. He uses x-rays and embroidered images of pop culture icons (from David Bowie to Snow White) to create images you will remember. I first saw his work in Miami in 2012. See those pieces HERE. These are a little different, extending beyond the rectangle of the x-ray itself.

Andrew Graham's Play On are new paintings by the artist. His strip paintings collect "characteristics of visual aesthetics."

Stephan Balkenhol Exhibit At September 4 To October 5, 2013 At Stephen Friedman Gallery (London)

Stephan Balkenhol's work is the subject of a new exhibit at Stephen Friedman Gallery (25 - 28 Old Burlington Street, London) September 4 to October 5, 2013.

I first saw Balkenhol's work at Expo Chicago in 2012. They are often three dimensional portraits painted onto carved wood. The work is a melding of folk art and high art. The wood he uses is poplar or wawa. He uses a single block of wood which he hand carves to create a rough surface that he then paints. In some cases he creates large, monumental sculptures.

But he is doing more than just this apparently these days, the use of photographic prints used with wooden screens is mentioned but I cannot picture the result!

Balkenhol, from Germany, lives and works in Karlsruhe, Germany and Meisenthal, France.

These are new works by the artist and are paintings using a multilayered approach; drawing, painting and video all play a part in layered boxes. As you may guess from the title of the exhibit plants, flowers and vases reoccur throughout.

Sher is a native of Washington D.C. and lives in Brooklyn.. She received her BFA from Cornell and her MFA from the University of Iowa.

"333 Portraits On The Devil's Toilet Paper" By James Charles At ArtNow NY

Picture
333 Portraits On The Devil’s Toilet Paper, a solo exhibition by James Charles runs from September 5 to 28, 2013 At ArtNow NY (548 W 28TH St. 2ND fl
New York)
. There will be an opening reception, with the artist, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 5.

The exhibition is the second by Charles at the gallery and is dedicated to his work on currency. The pieces are a sort of grafitti--and indeed people have added their drawings and thoughts to currency from its earliest use. Charles just takes it an artistic step further. It started out as doodling but he has started working with special inks and brushes to match the rules of the Federal reserve.

There is, of course, something subversive in the work as prominent figures on our money are turne into other characters.

Charles is from Seattle and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute.

New Works By Ivan Morley At Richard Telles Fine Art Beginning September 7, 2013

Picture
New works by Ivan Morley opens at Richard Telles Fine Art (7380  Beverley Blvd., Los Angeles) September 7, 2013. The exhibit runs through October 12. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, September 7. This is Morely's second solo show with the gallery. Works include pieces of fabric, aluminum, glass, watercolor and gouache drawings.

Describing his work and how he uses the materials he uses is not easy. It is hard to explain how he uses structures of cracked glass as a basis for work or how he paints images on glass. Perhaps it isn't hard to explain but it is not so easy to visualize, which is why you need ot see the works.

The artist has been part of exhibits in Los Angeles (where he lives), New York and Munich.

Imi Hwangbo is the subject of a new exhibit at M-Y Projects ( 450 Harrison Ave. 3rd fl, Boston ). Hwangbo's work consists of "constructed drawings." She uses translucent mylar, colored and cut into patterns. The fabric is then layered and turned into sculptural forms. The images are based on Italian cathedrals and Buddhist temple doors. She takes these patters and reconstructs, reconfigures them. The work combines digital processes with hand processes.

She holds an MFA in sculpture from Stanford and has received a number of fellowships including residencies at the American Academy in Rome, Yaddo and Camargo Foundation (France).

Fallen Women By Carri Skoczek Runs From October 10 To November 3, 2013 At Causey Contemporary

Picture
Carri Skoczek's Fallen Women runs from October 10 to November 3, 2013 at Causey Contemporary (111 Front St. Suite 208
Brooklyn). There will be an artist’s reception from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 10.

The exhibit features paintings of "fallen women" from art, history and literature. One such woman was Cortigiana Oresta, pictured here. The work here also explores female sexuality as a tool to attain power. Skoczek's work uses unique media such as pearlized powders and printers’ ink.

Skokie has a varied background. She has worked as a costume designer in Milwaukee and the Caribbean (there must be a neat story in the leap from the former locale to the latter!). She curates the annual Mermaid Show in NYC. She is a painter, printer, costumer and voodoo dollmaker. Her work has been exhibited all over the USA and abroad. And this is only part of her story.
