Large scale dreamlike photographs draw the audience into a sense of nostalgia. There is a familiarity, almost a muscle memory in the images. But not really. It only seems that way. There will be an opening reception 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3. GT2P, Chilean collective, are making their first solo gallery exhibition. It is the culmination of four years of work with Friedman Benda. Work combines the traditional with the digital. Material is harvested from Chile's innumerable volcanoes the pieces feature sculptural manipulation of re molten petrified lava. frosch&portmann (53 Stanton Street, New York) presents One For The Road, an exhibit of work by Edie Nadelhaft and Yanik Wagner. There will be an opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018. The title refers to the mixed-blessing of the USA's car dependence. Pieces range from picturesque back roads to freeway overpasses. The idea of motion is ever present as is a notion of melancholy that comes with the monotony of the daily grind and the anonymity that our automotive lifestyle sometimes brings. The title of the exhibition comes from the 1943 song by Johnny Mercer One More for My Baby (and One more for the Road). Monica Jahan Bose's latest exhibition runs March 31 to April 21, 2017 at Civilian Art Projects (Washington D.C.). There will be a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 31. Jahan Bose's work is often part performance, part installation and always have a point, are always aimed to enlighten and educate. This exhibit includes new paintings that arise from a number of performance and climate art actions. The title comes from a Bengali song.. There have been recent performances in Miami, Washington DC, Honolulu, Paris and Katahali Village (Bangladesh). All of these performances used the coconut as a symbol of climate resilience. This new symbol uses the artist's use of the sari. Her "performance pieces" are not just art but community activism. This exhibit is accompanied by a new publication, Rising Up to Climate Change: Storytelling with Saris. This is funded, in part, by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (part of the NEA). Bose's pieces employing sari's have been ongoing for many years. In addition to the opening there will be a Sari Workshop & Sing-A-Long at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14 and an Artist Talk/Closing Reception at 3 p.m. Saturday April 21. The fair is on the sand. You will get sand in your shoes going to the entrance. Check out the website linked above for other Scope-related events. The Platiunum VIP preview runs noon to 4 p.m, Tuesday, December 5 and the VIP preview runs 4 to 8 p.m. These cost $150 and $100 respectively. The great unwashed can come from 11 a.m to 8 p.m. December 6 to 10 for $35. Scope's focus on contemporary artists cuts a broad swath. Galleries including Antler Gallery (Portland), Castle Fitzjohns (New York) and the always fascinating Licht Feld (Basel)). An interview with John Grande, being shown by Licht Feld, will appear shortly. Ameringer McEnery Yohe (525 W/ 23rd St., NY) present an exhibition of work by Wolf Kahn from November 16 to December 23, 2017. There will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 16. The exhibition includes a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by John Yau. The exhibition includes paintings fro the pasy two years of Kahn's work in the studio. Color and form are key in his work. In some cases you will see detailed pieces and in others there seems to be only color. Yet, as you look at any piece it forms and reforms.The most abstract have form and the most detailed move toward the abstract with examination. Kahn's work is distinct. When you see a Wolf Kahn painting there is no mistaking who created it. He recently turned 90 years old and is still, apparently, working hard. Marinaro (1 Oliver St., New York) presents Tracy Thomason's Symbols, Signs and Signals from November 17 To December 22, 2017. There will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 17. The show is the artist's first solo exhibit in New York and consist of textural paintings built via layering painting and sculptural material. Paint, marble and dust are mixed into a clay-like base which is painstakingly applied to linen surfaces. There will be a reception, with the artist, from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 18. This exhibit shows two collections of paintings--5 Attempts to Make a Painting of Contemporary Anxieties and 8 Paintings of Thoroughly Researched People. The former is a set of paintings dealing with modern political concerns. The latter is inspired by diagonstic photos from medical texts. These paintings also reflect the notion of "We the People" and takes a look at life in this dystopian future. Howard Yezerski Gallery (460 Harrison Ave Unit A16, Boston) presents Babelations, a solo exhibit by Howard Johnson Saturday, November 18, 2017. There will be an opening reception 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Johnson's work focuses on an imaginary world--a dark, funny amalgamation of quasi-mythic images shown through the lens of pop culture. You will find references to alchemy, metaphysics, UFO conspiracies and more in the work. |
