Kohn, who works in New York, creates work based on the genomic. It might be hard to discern at a glance; after all, this seems to be a painting of a table with the usual accoutrements such a household item might contain. But in the artist's language and symbolism it becomes more--at least in theory. Find out more HERE.
Cynthia Reeves Projects has galleries in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York. This year at Art Miami they showed work by Lianghong Feng and Daniel Kohn (among others).

C. Grimaldis Gallery (Baltimore) Showed Markus Baldegger's "Saturnia III" At Art Miami 201412/7/2014 This piece by Markus Baldegger, Saturnia III, is breathtakingly beautiful. No piece of art really translates being photographed but here, when you imagine he scale (94.5 x 165 inches) you may get a sense of the work. It was one of the most subtly beautiful works in this fair; it is not flashy, no lights, no bits of flotsam glued to it. It is a work by a painter. Saturnia III is oil, tempera and ink on canvas. Baldegger is originally from Switzerland and currently divides time between Belgium and Germany. His first solo exhibition in the United States was at C. Grimaldis Gallery in November, 2014. Remember this artist's name. This piece by Helen Frankenthaler was shown by Cleveland's Contessa Gallery. The piece is etching, aquatint in colors, relief with hand stenciling in the margins. This piece does not have the metal backing some of these pieces have (according to a gentleman from Contessa Gallery). Another gallery had a piece with the metal back but this one was, for lack of a better way of putting it, prettier. It was selling for $125,000. Mayoral Galeria D'Art (Barcelona) showed these works by Joaquín Torres García and Jean-Michel Basquiat at Art Miami 2014. García was a Uruguayan artist of Catalan descent whose work embodied his artistic philosophy--Universal Constructivism. He wanted art to incorporate human experience. In addition to painting he worked in stained glass (something that seems appropriate looking at the painting here, Arte constructivo con sol y estrellas. Basquiat was a street artist before the current wave of street artists picked up a crayon. His work incorporates numerous media (in this case oil sticks, acrylic and collage). His untimely death robbed the world of a truly great talent--the world needed more Basquiat pieces in it. His death also denied the New York City Police Department of another potential victim. The Flat-Massino Carasi (Milan) showed Leonardo Ulian's Technological Mandala 20 at Scope Miami Beach 2014. Unlike the normal mandala this one is a tad more difficult to sweep away after it is completed, which is somehow fitting. Technology has changed morals and manners and more. The piece recalls impermanence of course but reminds us that this is not the same thing it once was. Nothing seems to be easy to sweep away these days (except when American police officers kill black folks). Yes, I am going to interject this into everything I post for awhile or I will feel guilty. It is no reflection on the gallery or the work by Ulian, just me. Art Lexing (Miami) showed these pieces by Ye Hongxing at Scope Miami Beach 2014. We posted pieces by the Chinese artists from the same gallery in 2012. As noted then her work is distinctive. They are all "crystal sticker collage" on canvas. If you look at the close up of the piece on the bottom you will notice some of the stickers are pop culture errata. Also allow me to add that, as I post these piece on art tonight, I wonder how I can post about art in the face of recent events, events that make any sensible person fear the advent of a police state where even video evidence won't send a cop to trial. But back to art; you can find out more about Hongxing HERE. She is a talented and unique artist. Mirage No. 7 (and close up)
Yi-Hwan-Kwon's Stretchy-Looking Sculptures Shown At Scope Miami Beach 2014 By Gana Art (Seoul)12/3/2014 Gana Art (Seoul) showed these spatially intriguing sculptures by Yi-Hwan-Kwan at Scope Miami Beach 2014. The pieces are hand painted on FRP, urethane foam and steel. The pieces have a lifelike feel but, obviously through a lens other than the naked eye--realism meets the surreal. Find out more about the artist HERE. Fredericks & Freiser Showed Work By David Humphrey And Gary Panter At Untitled Miami Beach 201412/3/2014 Frederichs & Freiser showed art by David Humphrey and Gary Panter at Untitled Miami Beach 2014. The two artists's divergent styles still somehow have a visual meeting point as you check out the gallery's booth. Is it the choice of artists? The arrangement of the paintings? I write this because juxtaposing the two here, in this way, you see more the differences than the similarities. There is a surreal quality to the work of both artists. Find out more on Panter HERE. And Humphrey HERE. Scope Miami Beach 2014 greets visitors with this gigantic piece by Swoon. Years ago, before I was aware of Swoon, I an art gallery owner told me her work was really popular amongst Chicago's youngsters; the kids would walk through the art fair on a field trip in boredom. Then they would see work by Swoon. And when you see this piece in person? It is easy to see why. She is an artist whose work is easy to identify from across a room. Her style is unique and hers. LVL 3, out of Chicago showed these pieces by an artist or artists that I didn't get the name for; I meant to go back but forgot. The folks at the booth were occupied at the time. I can tell you this; the gallery is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood and you can find out more about them and their artists HERE. One of the eye-catching things about this booth was a sort of sparseness IN the art and also an eclectic group of artists who also seem to fit well together (or it could be one artist with multiple personality disorder). |
