Lori Hyland Was Among Artists Shown By KM Fine Arts (Chicago/ Los Angeles) At Art Miami 20131/15/2014 KM Fine Arts (Chicago/Los Angeles) was one of the standout galleries at Art Miami 2013. Since 2006 the gallery has specialized in postwar, early modernism and contemporary art. Specific areas the of expertise include Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting and contemporary art. KM Fine Arts recently opened a new gallery in Los Angeles. Many of the artists shown at Art Miami are contemporary including; painter Lori Hyland, sculptor Carole Feuerman, John Chamberlain, Alexander Yulish, Dana Louise Kirkpatrick, Julie Mehretu and Michael Goldberg. Goldberg passed away in 2007 but that is close to now so let's still call him contemporary. The gallery also now has a program focused on emerging artists with an aim to help with their creative development and personal growth. The program includes studio visits, showing work in the galleries and other innovative projects. Untitled by John Chamberlain
Galeria Cordeiros (Porto) showed pieces by Miquel Barceló, A.R. Penck and Karel Appel at Scope Miami Beach 2013. Galeria Cordeiros has been around since 1994. The gallery is in a house in the Boavist area that has been altered. It was founded by Agostinho Cordeiro. They show and have works by renowned artists but also by artists whose work is not, perhaps, as known to the general populace but that are master artists regardless. Penck is a German painter, printmaker and sculptor who worked in Dresden under the communist East German government. As you might expect he and his fellow painters whose ideas were notin line with the officially sanctioned art were of interest to the authorities. These artist included Pench, Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz and others. These neo-expressionists have gone on to be featured, over the past 30 years in myriad exhibits worldwide. Penck is also, apparrently a jazz drummer! Appel, who passed away in 2006, was a Dutch painter and one of the founders of the Cobra School. Works from the school often use bright, almost garish colors. Appel was also a sculptor and a poet. Barceló, a Spanish painter, who is known for his work on the dome of the United Nations' European Headquarters. In addition to painting and drawing he is a sculpto a Art Wynwood's third edition runs from February 13 to 17, 2014. The contemporary art fair takes place (unsurprisingly) in the Wynwood Arts District in Miami. There will be over 70 international galleries on hand showing new and emerging artists. These are artists, as the release puts it, "recognized in the mainstream." In other words art the galleries think they can sell. This is a fair brought to you by the folks who do Art Miami and Aqua--two of the MUST see fairs during Art Week (both extensively covered here) The fair also highlights street art, murals and the like. Not exactly as cutting edge as some seem to think it is? But street art will always be with us and always be interesting (especially real street art). There will be art installations (some sponspred by Goldman Properties) and also murals in the VIP lounge created by top street artists. Wynwood became a haven for street artists. You still see lots of neat stuff--and some of it isn't even sponsored. There will also be a collaboration with Cash, Cans & Candy an international festival of street art from that mecca of the genre, Vienna, Austria. Lots of art--and not as overwhelming as Art Week--Art Wynwood is something to visit whether you are a collector or just an enthusiast. Galerie Peter Kilchmann (Zahnradstrasse 21, 8005 Zurich) presents Fêtes, a solo show by Marc-Antoine Fehr from January 17 to March 1, 2014. There will be an opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 16. Fehr is a Swiss painter who lives and works in both France and Switzerland. Red Truck Gallery (New Orleans) is always the gallery that causes a traffic jam. Everyone wants to stop and look. With distinctive artists like Chris Roberts-Antieau, Bryan Cunningham and Andres Basurto? Of COURSE people stop. Here is a booth that is totally not for those who think artists should fart dust. This is some living shit. This is art that makes YOU want to paint even though you know damn well you can't. Art should do that--at least on occasion (even if Banksy said he no longer felt that way in his movie...he was probably lying anyway). Did I say "alive"? Ok, lots of skulls along with dead deer here but still, I trust that you know what I mean. Fifty24MX (Mexico City) Showed Work By Erica Il Cane And Meredith Dittmar At Scope Miami Beach 20131/15/2014 Fifty24MX Gallery (Mexico City) showed work by Erica Il Cane and Meredith Dittmar at Scope Miami 2013. The gallery also has locations in San Francisco and Portland. These two artists form an interesting contrast (and wee story). At this point exhaustion had set in. Art viewing NEEDED to be over. Then I saw these and I had to stop and look at Il Cane's pieces which led me to then look at Dittmar's. Then came a second wind which led through the rest of Scope. Funny how it sorts out like that. Dittmar, from Portland, has a background in sociology, mathematics and computer science. As you can see from the pieces her work is three dimensional. Her work is a look at human consciousness. All you need to know about Erica Il Cane is at www.ericailcane.org. Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art (Salzburg/Vienna) Showed Work By Bernadi Roig And Barthélémy Toguo1/15/2014 Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art (Salzburg/Vienna) showed work by Bernardi Roig and Barthélémy Toguo at Scope Miami Beach 2013. Toguo is an artist from Cameroon who works in a wide variety of media; paint, video, photos, prints and sculpture. Mostly, he is known for his painting but when a man is so varied? It bares mentioning. Educated in Ivory Coast, France and Germany. He lives and works in Paris, Bandjoun and New York. You can find out more at www.barthelemytoguo.com. Roig is an artist I am fairly certain I saw work by elsewhere during Art Week 2013. It is fairly distinctive! He is a Spanish artist born in Mallorca. He lives and works in Barcelona and Binissalem. The piece shown here is made up of polyester resin, marble dust and a light bulb. Yeah I was half dead by the time I got to Natalie Kates Projects (New York) so all the images don't have the names for artists or the art. Let's turn it into a game of YOU go to the website and find the artist! Obviously the piece to the left is by Swoon. Who I thought had already "emerged" but let's not pick nits. The online gallery does something interesting. Natalie Kates is a consultant of sorts a "style curator." It is a different approach from a traditional gallery. It is about branding an image via art and style. It all seems very high end and lofty. Hashimoto Contemporary (San Francisco) showed work by Handiedan and Scott Hove at Scope Miami Beach 2013. Handiedan, a Dutch artist, creates collages using both computer techniques and old school cut and paste. She builds layers and if you look closely you can see all sorts of odds and ends and detritus in the work. Despite how they look on the page the piece below, Counterfeiter No. 4, is actually quite small. More on Handiedan HERE. Hove's work first inspires thoughts such as; "Wow, I am glad that thing doesn't really exist." But you might, after that initial reaction, find these pieces oddly beautiful. And that seems to be part of Hove's aim; he wants to find the link between the brutal and the beautiful (sounds like a soap opera I might actually watch). He works in decorative media--the sort of media that isn't usually considered appropriate for "fine art." Find out more (especially about Cakeland) HERE. |
