Joseph Stashkevetch's "The More Things Change" Opens At Von Lintel Gallery, NYC, January 10, 20131/9/2013 Joseph Stashkevetch’s latest exhibition, The More Things Change, runs at Von Lintel Gallery (520 West 23rd Street Ground Floor, New York) from January 10 through February 13, 2013. This is the artist’s fourth solo show with the gallery. There will be an opening reception Thursday, January 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit features new drawings by the artist—some of the most complex he has ever done. His work is always painstakingly detailed and beautiful. The black and white works are the result of a detailed progression. Stashkevetch begins by sanding away the surface of the paper and the builds up the image with conte crayon which bonds to the paper creates an ethereal an atmospheric effect. The works are large in scale. Stashkevetch, from the USA, studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. His work is in collections such as the Dallas Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. O.K. my records SHOW Matthew Burrows was shown by London's Vigo Gallery at Pulse Miami 2012. I am pretty sure they did. Burrows is from the United Kingdom, currently residing in Sussex. When you think of his work think "sex, prayer and fine draughtsmanship." You will also notice his work has a "fluid" quality. There seems to be an ebb and flow between objects--even objects clearly defined as separate. Object is perhaps a poor choice of words but it is somewhere between an object and a form. Kent Dorn is from South Carolina and his piece, Asylum (2011) was shown at Pulse Miami by Freight + Volume (New York City). This is getting near the time where I stare dumbstruck at photos I took of marvelous pieces by artists like Dorn and resort to cribbing from the gallery website. You can do that yourself (and read some neat interviews with Dorn) HERE. Why do I start doing this? I have used the same adjectives too many times. This work caught my eye, it has a perspective and a depth (literally) that is unique. The pieces are three dimensional but not because of any accordion vision (who popularized that a couple years ago? I would have remembered when I started posting this Art Basel week stuff). It is mixed media on canvas. The color of Dorn’s work (in general as well as Asylum specifically) also leaps out at you. The piece is somewhere between reality and a cartoon, somewhere between sense and extrasense. Go see his work whenever you get a shot. He lives in Houston so if you are in that great Texan city be sure to keep an eye out for him. Pieces by Claire Kerr and Ralph Fleck were shown at Pulse Miami 2012 by Purdy Hicks Gallery, London. Portrait and Label (After Petrus Christus) to the right and Chipped Crockery are both by Kerr and works produced in 2012. Both are likewise oil on gesso panel. I regret the blurriness of Portrait and Label. Kerr is an English artist, educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University and at the Wimbeldon School of Art. You can find out more about her HERE. Below Chipped Crockery is Fleck's Feldstuck 13/VIII which is oil on canvas. The closer view is to give an idea as to the texture of the work. Fleck is a German artist educated at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe. He is currently professor for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg. Find out more about him and his work HERE. Anthony Ardavin is an artisy we have meant to harass about an interview since first seeing his work at South Florida Art Center, Miami Beach. That was several years ago. He now has a new and improved website and you should be sure to visit it with frequency. Head to www.anthonyardavin.com. I Want To Grow Up To Fast Judy Gelles’ Fourth Grade Project is an exhibit of photos and video running from January 12 to February 23, 2013 at Pentimenti Gallery (145 North Second Street, Philadelphia). There will be an opening reception Saturday, January 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. and an artist talk, Saturday February 2, at 3 p.m. Gelles focus is on children here and she has visited public inner city schools and private schools to bring to light the different challenges facing the kids. She asked 140 fourth graders from schools in India, the USA and China the same questions and incorporated the answers into her art. This exhibit consists of eight large photos (40 x 30 inches) as well as video work. Allegra LaViola Gallery Presents "Gia Condo" A Solo Exhibition Of The Works Of Andrea Mary Marshall1/4/2013 Allegra LaViola Gallery (179 East Broadway) presents Gia Condo, an evening of art (video, paintings and photos) by Andrea Mary Marshall.
