Atari Teenage Riot (Alec Empire and Nic Edo) reformed in Spring 2010 and signed to Dim Mak. The two are joined in this incarnation by MC CX Kidtronik. The band has always been loud, abrasive, political and censored in Germany. Atari Teenage Riot are best remembered for their crazy live shows. You can see some of this in the video from the 2010 Fusion Fest. And you can see more in the video for Activate (video above). If you want a version of the song you can download it at Soundcloud. The band will also be heading out on tour through North America this call with Autoerotique (I do not link to them because their site is a reported attack site by Firefox). Zein Al-Jundi’s new release Sharrafouni, comes out September 21. Al-Jundi is a Syrian singer whose debut was traditional songs from her homeland. Her latest release was being recorded in Lebanon in 2006 when Pierre Amine Gemayel (scion of a well known political family—the Kennedy’s of Lebanon) was assassinated. With civil war looming Al-Jundi thought it sensible to head to Damascus. Unlike her first record, this latest one has more of a pop sensibility—but not a Western pop sensibility. The 11 song record has ballads, disco, rock and most important her distinctive voice. Al-Jundo left Syria to attend University of Texas (Austin) and has degrees in Architecture and also in Urban design. She also teaches bellydance. Find her record! The single is Center of the Sun from the band’s eponymous new record. It comes out electronically September 14 and as a physical release on September 28. For more go to the band website at www.the88.net. Unicycle Loves You, Mountain Lungs I wonder what percentage of any given audience for the live Yo Gabba Gabba shows are people with kids versus hipsters on ecstacy. The world may never know. Unicyle Loves You might be in a position to answer this question as they have been added to several dates of the Yo Gabba Gabba: There’s A Party In My City Tour. As if THAT were not enough the band have just released their second record, Mirror,Mirror. A track from that CD, Mountain Lungs, is above for your perusal. Indie, Sci-fi, surf, call it what you will, but Unicycle Loves You are living the life. They also are playing some dates of their own sans the disturbing Yo Gabba Gabba creatures. That tour begins in Chicago Sept, 11. Which is soon I think. I am just becoming acquainted with the bands on Paper + Plastick Records. They make rock n roll music. Others may try to hang some sub genre on the bands but that is what they are to me. Worth a look and a listen One of the bands, in particular, that bears further scrutiny is Richmond Va.’s The Riot Before. The band is heading out on a tour with Oklahoma City’s Red City Radio. (who have recently signed to Paper + Plastik). Some advice Red City guys? Add stuff to your website.... The tour is titled The Dive Bar & Burritos Tour. As someone who has toured dive bars, however, I do not recommend ordering the burritos. There was this one place, man everyone in the band was shooting soup for a week. But I digress! Videos for both bands below. The past few days I have been, inadvertently, posting nothing but electronic and dance music related stuff. I suspect I was possessed by the spirit of Shit Robot.
But here is something totally different. Bright & Barrow Records has just released a collection of NYC/NJ punk bands, Cause A Revolution Volume One. Ok, I think we are a long way past “punk” being revolutionary but so what? Young angry rockers can still be young angry rockers. The comp will set you back (download) $5. Go to the Bright & Barrow Website to order it. If a $5 price tag isn’t punk rawk enough for you you can also listen to a streaming version at AMP Magazine. Bands on the comp, Up For Nothing, Step Aside, The Tattle Tales and Banquets will be playing at Arlene’s Grocery on Sept 3. It will also be streamed live on RealPunkRadio.com. |
