We are hoping to have an interview with her and perhaps some more music shortly.
I heard Gabby Young & Other Animals awhile back and was mesmerized. Mapanare posted the Youtube video of the title track from her new record, We're All In This Together. There is a quirky, gypsy quality to the music (even if the image seems very polished perfect). I suspect this young woman is the real deal. We are hoping to have an interview with her and perhaps some more music shortly.

Chicagoans take note, Antennas Up are playing every Tuesday in June at Panchos. Hailing from Kansas City, the band are a soul-funk-electro amalgam. I haven’t heard much from the band but the bits I have have made me curious. And nothing makes me curious. I mean I am dull as dishwater and totally non-inquisitive.
Antennas Up released their eponymous debut in 2009 and have played with a slew of swell bands and at SXSW. A new record is in the works as well and keep an eye open for it in the fall. You can hear some of the band’s music at their website. Shows, Tuesdays at Pancho's June 7 With, Grades, and Lennon Bone (Ha Ha Tonka) DJ: Jack from My Gold Mask June 14 With Sword House and Hollus. DJ: Jim from Unicycle Loves You June 21 DJ: Brad from Volcanoes Make Islands June 28 With Hawley Shoffner DJ: Austin & Alex from Noise FM The new ep 12 inch from Bikini, RIPJDS, is coming out June 7. It is a remix ep. Remixes include efforts from Win Win, CFCF, Teen Daze, Dreamboat and Houses. I liked the video, even though I do not recommend it for epileptics. I thought I was going to have a seizure watching it If you want to know more about the band head to, biikiinii.com. I was supposed to interview them at one point. But somehow I screwed it up or couldn't schedule it or was drunk and in jail. Something like that. They are also providing a Larry Tree Remix of their song, Play House, off their ep of the same name. The first date is in Chicago, WOOO HOOO! The band is from L.A. and they will be playing some shows and making festival appearances. Shows May 29 – Santa Barbara, CA @ Lightning in a Bottle Festival Sept. 17 – Austin, TX @ Austin City Limits festival Suzanna Choffel apparently describes her new record as “blues-colored dark grit drawing from musical influences that include Stax-style jazz and Motown.” Ok, works for me.
Choffel appeared at Waterloo Records in Austin but I got to this too late to let you know in advance. I apologize. But there are other opportunities to see Choffel. Especially a May 28 show at the One World Theatre. www.OneWorldTheatre.org Shows May 28, One World Theatre, Austin June 11, McGonigels Mucky Duck, Houston June 16, Buddy Holly Center, Lubbock June 17, Threadgills, Austin June 23, The Aardvark, Fort Worth June 24, The Blue Door, Oklahoma City Johan Agebjörn (Sally Shapiro) has a new video, and as the headline above mentions it features Ercola and Queen of Hearts. The track is from the new record, Casablanca Nights. It is out now. You can hear more tracks at the website. The press release mentions this has something to do with haute couture. Take a look and tell me. I am wearing jeans I bought at a thrift store and a t-shirt someone tied to my backpack at a club 7 years ago. The record is cool, has lots of collaborations and you should check it out. Ok. I sing to cats. Usually they are songs about eating them or telling them I am going to make them into a hat. But I do not give speeches to them. Just seems silly to me. Juliana Hatfield has a new record coming out, Speeches Delivered To Animals And Plants, that disagrees.
It comes out August 30 and was a fan-funded record. Good for her. Awhile back I interviewed Hatfield for Gearwire.com (three audio interviews; one, two, three, four). She was smart and clever and thoughtful. I recall, after the audio interview ended, I made one of those comments that comes out wrong. I forget exactly what I said (it was music gear related). But I immediately felt like a pinhead and thanked her and hung up. It was something about a guitar (I have the same guitar she was talking about). As anyone who knows me will note, I rarely say anything stupid that embarrasses me (cough, cough, cough). ANYWAY. enough reminiscing. The record was funded via www.pledgemusic.com and some of the money from the record will benefit Hatfield’s fave animal shelters. How much of the money I cannot say but any amount is nice. Money will go to the Save a Sato animal shelter in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. Her last record, Peace and Love, was awesome. Bird of Youth’s new record, Defender, is out. You can hear it free for awhile at AOL Spinner. I love AOL Spinner. Bird of Youth are also having a record release show in Brooklyn on June 9th at The Rock Shop. They will be touring with Kathyrn Calder of The New Pornographers (who I also love).
Usually I do not get into who produces stuff but this one was produced by Will Sheff of Okkervil River and Phil Plazzolo who has worked with the likes of The New Pornographers, Ted Leo and Neko Case. The reord also has a slew of guest musicians. Shows June 9 - Brooklyn, NY - The Rock Shop RECORD RELEASE SHOW 13 - Boston, MA - T.T. The Bears 15 - Philadelphia, PA - World Café Live 16 - Washington, DC - The Red Palace Typhoon, out of Portland Oregon, released the ep, A New Kind of House, last month and have been preparing for a slew of live dates to support the record.
