The Jessica Stuart Few, from British Columbia are heading home for a tour. The band will be playing mostly new material that they have yet to play live for their family friends and neighbors (and you). The record based on this material will come out in 2012 (just in time for the Mayan apocalypse). These art-pop enthusiasts have headlined both the TD Toronto Jazz Festival and the North By North East Music Conference. The band has been on tour all over the country. Upcoming dates are below. As is their video for Kid Dream. Tour Aug 4 – White Rock, BC – Beecher Street Café, 7pm Aug 5 – Vancouver, BC – Goldie’s Pizza, 9:30pm Aug 6 – Pender Island, BC – Poets Cove Resort, Syrens Lounge, 8pm Aug 7 – Courtenay, BC – Chill & Grill Festival, Simms Memorial Park, 6pm Aug 8 – Nanaimo, BC – Jazz Downstairs @The Acme, Acme Food Co., 7:30pm Aug 10 – Kamloops, BC – Music In The Park, Riverside Park, 7pm Aug 11 – Kelowna, BC – The Yellowhouse, 7pm Aug 12 – Salt Spring Island, BC – Moby’s Marine Pub, 8pm Aug 13 – Victoria, BC – Fort Street Café w/Anne Schaefer, 8pm Aug 14 – Vancouver, BC – The Libra Room, 9pm Mandala, a music project of Cameron McLain, is releasing a debut, The Visitation in October on The Odes Records. The group draw their music from a variety of styles but also a variety of views. They use humor and tragedy and sensuality in this work. There will also be a USA and European tour to support the record—and not a four or five date one. Dates are coming soon.
McLain went to high school with a herd of now well known musical types; members of Mumford & Sons, Charlie Fink and Noah and the Whale. He was once in a band with Andrew Davie of Cherbourg. He has sort of been in the midst of the UK folk scene. Keep an eye open for the release and the tour. Treal Lee and Prince Rick, of Dallas, have a new single, Work, which features Stuey Rock (aka J-Nicks of Atlanta’s Hot 107.9). The song was produced by Mr Hanky of Collipark Music (Collipark Records is the duo’s label). So basically this is a star-studded effort. Mr. Hanky has worked with tons of prominent artists. But back to Treal Lee and Prince Rick . The two teamed up for the first time in High School, scraping together cash to get studio time. This led to a series of underground hits and the rest is history. Check out this totally underground effort. The Hideout’s 15th Birthday Party will be celebrated with some very special friends-- Andrew Bird, Mavis Staples and a slew of others on Saturday, September 24. The festival is always worth a visit and has raised a quarter of a million bucks for charity.
In addition to Bird and Staples others playing include; Big Freedia, Jon Langford & the Burlington Welsh Male Choir, Booker T. Jones, The Eternals, Opera-Matic, White Mystery, Kids These Days and more to be announced soon. Tickets on sale Friday, July 22 at 10 a.m. The Birthday Massacre are releasing an ep, Imaginary Monsters, on Metropolis August 9. I read the press release and I still have no earthly clue what this band is all about. I admire the use of a lot of words to say nothing. It is why I watch so many political speeches.
Anyway they are supposed to be scary, beautiful…wonderful and they are from Canada so they are probably polite. Since this is on Metropolis and there are remixes by a variety of industrial types I am thinking this is something you industrial types will want to have a look at…even though the term “electronica” is used (and then followed by “aggressive guitars”). I am having some fun with press releases—read 50 of them a day and try to not have crossed eyes—but give the band a listen. The Tower and the Fool’s XIII will be released September 7th. The record is out digitally and on 7 inch white vinyl. The band hail from Providence, Rhode Island. How many bands come from Rhode Island? I mean can’t you actually throw a rock OVER Rhode Island? There isn’t room for two bands. They have a video for the track, Die Alone, and you can check it out below. The band is also set to appear on Run For Cover Records’ compilation, Mixed Signals. The compilation is the 50th release from the label and comes out August 30. Hear more from the band HERE. Blacklight Horses Matt Bauer's latest record, The Jessamine County Book of the Living, came out in June. Bauer is also currently out on tour spreading his orchestral folk stylings across the nation.
