One reviewer compared Quiet Lights to Sigur Ros and MGMT. Doesn’t that make you want to give them a listen? Of COURSE it does. The band formed in Brooklyn in 2009 and have been making beautiful music ever since. The new 7 inch has art by Maxi Schramm of Porcelain Raft. The single, No More Canyons has the track Break Trouble Wait on the B-side. The single was released February 15 on Seaboard/Old Flame Records.
The band is also playing in New York City, at 8 p.m., March 1 in Brooklyn at The Rock Shop (with Mansions & Junipers and Iceland’s A Minor Reflection. They will also play April 1 in Brooklyn at Cameo (with Heaven and Korda). Watch the Break Trouble Wait video HERE. The Wave Pictures latest, Beer In The Breakers, comes out April 19 on Moshi Moshi Records. The band apparently lives for the lo-fi….this was recorded in one day. I think Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde was done in a similar fashion so don’t worry. Although one of the songs on that record is 20 minutes long. The band made their debut in North America last year with a double record (hmm can I use the Blonde on Blonde comparison AGAIN you think?), Instant Coffee Baby/If You Leave It Alone. Oddly the band have a decades long history in Europe but are only just reaching out those of us in the USA and Canada. Below is a video for their song, I Love You Like A Madman. I Hate Our Freedom’s first release, Seriously, comes out March 1. The band is releasing a 7” digital single today. Ok….if it is digital guys, it isn’t a 7”…but nonetheless it is coming out and you can buy it at store.mtsrecords.com.
The first single is Batting Practice. I think. The band is playing NYC shows such as one March 9 with Samiam at Santos Party House. They also pay to tour the USA to support the EP. Architecture in Helsinki haven’t released a record in four years but they have offered fans a sample from their upcoming disc, Moment Bends (out May 3). You can stream that track, Contact High, HERE and download it via Pitchfork.
The band has been working on this attempt at timeless dance music for over two years in the band’s studio, Buckingham Palace. Queen Elizabeth sat in on the bassoon for some sessions, made tea on other occasions and did the occasional interpretive dance to inspire the band. The band is also embarking on a world tour, US Dates are below. Have a look at their website for worldwide dates. Patrick Damphier, the man behind Field Days, recorded the record in his parents’ basement in Nashville on a 4 track reel to reel he somehow (begged, bought, stole) from an ex-Loretta Lynn staff writer. He then made the packaging for CD and vinyl himself (see video below). He is also touring as the bassist for The Mynabirds (dates also below). Download the record HERE. Damphier is working on his second release with Brian Deck, who has also worked with Iron & Wine, Red Red Meat and Modest Mouse. Tour with Mynabirds (opening for Bright Eyes on some dates) 3/7/11 New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge 3/10/11 Boston, MA @ House of Blues w Bright Eyes 3/11/11 Portland, ME @ State Theatre w Bright Eyes 3/13/11 Toronto, ON @ Sound Academy w Bright Eyes 3/14/11 Royal Oak, MI @ Royal Oak Theatre w Bright Eyes 3/15/11 Chicago, IL @ The Riviera Theatre w Bright Eyes 3/16/11 Champaign, IL @ Foellinger Auditorium w Bright Eyes 3/17/11 Nashville, TN @ Ryman Auditorium w Bright Eyes So far the artists for the Governors Ball Music Festival include Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Big Boi, Neon Indian, People Under the Stars, Miami Horror, Passion Pit DJ Set, Mac Miller, Outasight with many more to be announced. Tickets go on sale February 24 at 10 a.m. It looks like they go on sale HERE, rather than through Ticketmaster so there is a good chance scalpers won’t have them all in the first five minutes they are available. There will be two stages at the fest but the sets will not overlap, so you won’t have to make any Solomonic choices about which band to take in. As you can tell from the list of bands above the bands selected to play are pretty diverse but all high energy. A big multi-genre dance party is what I suspect is going to break out. You will get a free ferry ride to and from the Island (via Pier 11 at the corner of South and Wall Streets). The Chapin Sisters, based in Los Angeles, just got off tour singing back up for She & Him (opening for them as well). Following this they headlined some shows and opened for Rooney. Louise Stephens from the band produces the duo’s latest record, Two. Lily and Abigail Chapin are now heading out on tour with their haunting, almost Appalachian meolodies. Dates are below. Stephens and Jesse Lee of Gang Gang Dance co-produced the record, adding new elements to the tried and true acoustic guitar and harmonies the sisters were known for. I have always heard that siblings have something that no relatives cannot reproduce when they sing harmony together, some sort of synchronicity. Not sure if that is true but I see no reason why it couldn’t be, blood being thicker than water and all that.
