Peasant has toured with the likes of Steve Earle, Cursive, Deer Tick and others.
You can listen to (and if you go to the Soundclould page download) the track, The Flask.
_ Peasant, the brainchild of singer/songwriter Damien DeRose has a new full length record, Bound for Glory, coming out April 17. The record comes out on London’s Schnitzel Records (which I would have assumed to be German, I mean… “schnitzel”). The record is the follow up to Shady Retreat. Peasant has toured with the likes of Steve Earle, Cursive, Deer Tick and others. You can listen to (and if you go to the Soundclould page download) the track, The Flask.

_ Anthony Raneri, singer from the band Bayside, has a solo ep, New Cathedrals, coming out shortly. Different sort of feel from Bayside (hence it being released as a solo effort). You can check out the track Sandra Partial below. The recording also features Jarrod Alexander and Steve Choi. It was recorded and mixed by Davey Warsop. _ Yellow Ostrich, from NYC, are set to release their latest, Strange Land, on March 6, 2012. The record was produced by the band with Beau Sorenson (Sparklehorse, Death Cab for Cutie). This record follows The Mistress, an effort solo produced by singer and guitarist, Alex Schaaf. Schaaf also played all the instruments. The band now is a band with the addition of Jon Natchez and drummer Michael Tapper. Scchaaf’s efforts, preceding The Mistress, had been a sort of seeming production self-flagellation. He worked with only vocals and a drum machine on one release. He used only lyrics from actor Morgan Freeman’s Wikipedia page for another. All challenging to be sure but likewise also probably not destined to send your music hurling up the charts (which is fine really..I mean the charts are crap anyway these days). Yellow Ostrich toured a good deal in 2011 with Ra Ra Riot and Antlers. It isn’t out of line to think a tour might follow this release. _ Gary Go is a dance music guy. When we post info on dance music I sometimes get email from cranky rock n rollers about how it “sucks.” I usually respond with “Get a job and stop bothering me.” Dance music is every bit as much MUSIC and hard to make (well) as any three chord rock band out there. Go makes a sort of pop dance that will appeal to a variety of music fans anyway. The record, Now Was Once The Future, is now out. I just posted this late. Check out the track, Our Love Is On The Line below. Go produced the record and it features a slew of notable musicians. Musicians who have worked with Mars Volta, Coldplay, Goldfrappe, Sigur Ros, Moby etc are all featured. Our Love Is On The Line
_ If there is a new (relatively new) band out there I like more than The Joy Formidable I am not sure who it is. The band will begin a USA tour in March with two other bands worth checking out; A Place To Bury Strangers and Exitmusic (the latter joining the tour in Minneapolis). The band toured the US and released their debut full length, The Big Roar, last year. They were also at Lollapalooza where their set was, for my taste, too damned short. They also opened for the Foo Fighters here and there and performed on a few late night TV shows here. Go see them. I am hoping a Chicago date too. Tour

The guitar heavy works of this alt-country (as much as I hate to use that term) were, on this outing, produced by David Lowery. He has previously worked with Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven. That is some alterno street cred right there for a producer. You can get the track, Santa Ana Winds, free by heading to the Sons Of Bill Website. I could have embedded it but you really should click over to their site and join their mailing list. The band is also heading out on tour. All the shows below are free shows so you have no reason to not check the band out. Tour March 20th Mockingbird Staunton, VA March 21st Jewish Mother Virginia Beach, VA March 22nd Paramount Charlottesville, VA March 23rd IOTA Club Washington, DC March 24th Capitol Ale House Richmond, VA March 25th Awful Arthur's Roanoke, VA _ Have Gun Will Travel, from the sprawling Metropolis of Bradenton, Florida, are a mix of rock, pop, folk and country. The most recent record, Mergers and Acquisitions, is out now and they head out to support the release in February. Check out the video for their track, Thirteen Miles to Empty Below. If you are into that elusive, chimerical genre known as “Americana” these guys are likely to appeal to you. The band have been around since 2006, releasing their debut, Casting Shadows Tall as Giants, two years later. Tour

There better be some romantic tracks on there. The record was mixed by Mark Linett who is known for mixing The Beach Boys' SMiLe; the oft-bootlegged unreleased follow up to Pet Sounds (which was resurrected in 2004). The choice of Linett tells you a little about the band’s sound. They have a liking for Herb Alpert and Burt Bacharach. You may recall the three free ep releases from the band at the end of 2011. The band are currently on tour. _ Dark New Day is a dark heavy rock lovers dream. It features members of Sevendust, Evanescence, Virgos Merlot and Stereomud/Eye Empire. The group will release their second record, New Tradition, on February 28, 2012. Their last full-length record, Twelve Year Silence, came out in 2005 but do not hold it against them. They are busy—working with multiple bands, touring like crazy. The band was on Warner (and indeed there is an unreleased record, Hail Mary, from that experience). Their latest is being released on Goomba Music. _ Avan Lava have a new ep, Flex Fantasy, on the way. Their previous release, Vapors, was all about the “chillwave” while the new one is a more high-energy dance music affair. You can check out the ep, streaming, via Soundcloud. Avan Lava will perform in NYC on January 12 and then hit SXSW in March. Members of Avan Lava have worked as producers or performing with an impressive list of acts; Fischerspooner, Cold Cave, CSS ,Frankie Rose, Lemonade, Lia Ices, SSion and more. They have also done tons of remixes. Check out the track live HERE. |
