Guards Stood Out At Lollapalooza Despite Unenviable Time Slot, Photos Of Them Opening For The Joy Formidable In Chicago In April.

Guards had to first slot on the "Lake Shore" stage at Lollapalooza 2013. Probably not the ideal time slot but the band truly made the most of it.

One of the things that makes Guards fun to watch is that they seem to actually like what they are doing--giving off the vibe that even if they were playing in dive bar in Newark they would be performing just the same.

Their music is a sort of vaguely hard-edged pop rock...well, sometimes it is. Other times it turns right into a crazy psychedelic freak out. One of the things that make Guards so appealing is that they do this seemlessly.  Maybe this is because their indie rock-ish songs have more than a dash of psychedelic freak out in them?

Go see them and decide for yourself. They are on tour with Queens of the Stone Age in September. Or, if they are not playing near you, check out their LP, In Guards We Trust, via Bandcamp below.

These photos were taken when the band played with The Joy Formidable at the Vic Theater in Chicago. Yes, I know they are not very good but after seeing this show I figured I had to post them. The band also played an after-Lollapalooza show with Alt J at Lincoln Hall in Chicago.

For more info on Guards head to the band's Facebook page.

The Joy Formidable At The Vic Theater, Chicago, April 2, 2013

There is  a temptation to describe the Welsh band, The Joy Formidable as, somehow, being formidable. This must be resisted at all costs. It has nothing to do with the band, of course. It is simply an affront to writing. So let's forget the subject was even broached.

The Joy Formidable released an EP, A Balloon Called Morning, in 2010 (in the USA anyway). The EP was released on Ayad Al Adhamy of Passion Pit's label, Black Bell Records. They followed that, in March of 2011 with full-length, The Big Roar. Their latest , Wolf's Law, came out at the beginning of 2013.

To keep up on tour dates and more head to www.thejoyformidable.com.

Picture
The band is a three piece made up of vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist/keyboardist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas. Thomas is the least pictured here. Drummers are always flailing so are difficult to photograph (not unlike the Yeti). Of course, if they stayed still it would be a terribly dull show.

And this is not a band that puts on a dull show. In fact they played the night after Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Chicago and did not, at all, pale in comparison. The Joy Formidable are a band to see live, they have written some of the most intriguing rock music out in recent years--music that will stand the test of time.

If you can write a song as good as Whirring?  You can hang up your guitar and go home. You've done enough right there. Mercifully The Joy Formidable did not stop there. There is real joy in this music, recorded or live. If you don't feel happy to be alive after seeing them. You may be dead.

Big Black Delta At Empty Bottle Chicago (The Night After Opening For Jane's Addiction)

Picture
Jonathan Bates, the man behind Big Black Delta is from Venezuela. At the age of seven he found himself in Miami and at the age of 17 he found himself in Boston, at the Berklee College of Music. He left Berkeley, apparently over a girl, and wound up in Los Angeles.

It is sort of a good thing he did because, ultimately, the result of this move was Big Black Delta. After playing with the more traditional band set up Bates decided to get modern. He bought an old lap top and began designing sounds and making his own music. We do not know what happened with the girl.

Big Black Delta's debut LP, BBDLP1, is available now.

Picture
It is hard to imagine a “band” with a laptop and two drummers rocking but Big Black Delta manage it.

“Right now we are out with Jane's Addiction and I am having the time of my life. We get along very well with the band.” says Bates.

Big Black Delta also found themselves onstage with Janes Addiction—which is a special bonus for someone who is a fan. And as a fan there was another plus.

“We get to see them every night and play in front of their crowd who have treated us very well. It has been a blessing and I get to watch them for free.” he says.

Bates says it could be a dangerous thing to head out on tour supporting such an established act but bot the band and their fans welcomed them with open arms.

When asked to describe what the band’s music sounds like Bates sasays it is "...like the final scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind but pornographic."

Pretty spot on. When you see them live you will get it.

“This is our first national tour and we are trying to hit everywhere that asks us.” says Bates.

In  addition to opening slots they are playing solo shows when they have the time to do so. One of those was in Chicago  at The Empty Bottle (these photos are from that show).
Picture
How does Bates describe the difference between playing solo and opening for Janes Addiction? It isn't QUITE location, location, location but it is related in a way.

"The difference is real estate, the size of the stage. Load in guys, you have all these union guys." he says.

Bates often collaborates with other artists—inclluding M83 (he played live guitar for them and recorded vocals). He has also done remixes and produced work for other artists.

Ane Brun At Lincoln Hall In Chicago--Opening Fall 2012 Peter Gabriel Tour

Picture
Earlier in the year Ane Brun toured the USA with Gemma Ray. These photos are from the final dates on that tour. Brun recently announced that she will be supporting Peter Gabriel on his upcoming North American tour. Sixteen dates are below.

Brun’s music is achingly beautiful.  You know why Peter Gabriel was enturalled. Imagine Bjork with none of the irritating bits (a lot to imagine it is true).  Comparing Ane Brun to another performer isn’t right in any case. She is someone you compare other performers to—her music is a benchmark. It is that proverbial yardstick  you use to measure the work of other artists.

The tour, at least from the Gabriel fan perspective, is to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of So. Gabriel will perform the record in its entirety).  He will also be playing other music from his vast, celebrated career. If you go be sure to get there early to see Brun. Her music is hypnotic and brilliant. Check out the video for the track, Words, below. Brun's latest record is It All Starts With One.

Picture
Brun also performed, as her encore, her version of Arcade Fire's Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).  The performer's career began in the small Norwegian town of Molde. From there Brun wound up a street performer in Barcelona. If I recall correctly this is where Gabriel came across the singer.

She sings on Gabriel's latest, New Blood. You can find out more about Brun at her website, www.anebrun.com.

Elin Ruth Sigvardsson was the first of three performers--and is a talented singer, musician and songwriter. She also played keyboards for Ume.

Gemma Ray Opening For Ane Brun At Lincoln Hall, May 22, 2012

5/31/2012

Picture
Gemma Ray's recordings seem to jump genres with ease. If you love one record you might not love the next. But you can be sure that each one, at the very least, will be interesting. Her latest record, Island Fire, came out May 29. There are already two videos out. One of these, Flood and a Fire, is mixed in with the photos below.

These pictures were taken when Ray opened for Ane Brun at Lincoln Hall on May 22, 2012--the last day of the North American tour.  Ray played the tour with herself on guitar and vocals and a drummer. It was very stripped down! It is also a testament to her talent that it worked.

How does she take a song with a sort of loungey-electronic vibe and pull it off with just her and a guitar? I do not know but she does. She also did a Mudhoney cover, which earns bonus points.

Picture
Ray's music might get lumped in with that wave of nostalgia for all things 50s and 60s in the UK over the past few years. It shouldn't be. There is much more going on here than just that. I am not always sure what but it is certainly more. The first video off of Island Fire, was for the track, Rescue Me. Watch it to try to make sense of what I am babbling about when it comes to nostalgia.

For one while there is a certain "nostalgia" vibe in the music  I am not entirely sure it is for a time or place that ever, in fact, existed.  She is an excellent vocalist and guitarist and has a definite presence on stage.
Picture
It is to be hoped that Ray will return to the USA soon with a full band. This isn't to suggest there is a THING wrong with how she toured this time. She was great but it would be interesting to hear her songs fleshed out with a full band  a second time.

School Of Seven Bells At Lincoln Hall In Chicago, April 28, 2012

School of Seven Bells are one of the best bands out there right now. The bring a blend of pop, dance and ambient and mix in high concept song writing. There is even something a little FUNKY in there somewhere (which is amazing for a band with no live bassist).

To make things even better they are a fantastic live band.

There are a lot of bands out there these days who mix dance music with pop or rock or calypso or whatever. That is all well and good but, very often, there are seems and glitches, both figuratively and literally, in the music.

School of Seven Bells' music and performance is seemless and glitchless. They do not sound like they are trying to be anything. They just are something.

Picture
Picture
School of Seven Bells formed six years ago. Alejandra Deheza and Benjamin Curtis remain from the early days. You may recollect Curtis from Secret Machines and Deheza from on! air! library! Their first record was Alpinisms  (2008) which was followed by  Disconnect From Desire. Ghostory, released earlier this year, is the band’s third record.

One guy in the audience had been shopping in a nearby CVS and saw the band on the marquee and bought a ticket. Others, a diverse group, talked between the opening act and School of Seven Bells about seeing them opening for Interpol or Blonde Redhead. Apparently, anyone who sees them wants to see them again and again, Everyone had a story about how they first came to hear the band.

Picture
In addition to the recently released, Ghostory, the band put out a cover of the Siouxsie and the Banshees track, Kiss Them For Me, as a 7 inch. That release came out on Record Store Day and was limited to a 1,000 copies. They still had a handful at the Chicago show.

Callaghan At Space In Evanston, Opening for Shawn Mullins

2/25/2012

Picture
Callaghan is an English singer songwriter whose first full-length record, Life in Full Colour, comes out May 1, 2012. She played recently at Space in Evanston, Illinois with Shawn Mullins, who also produced her record.

Her music is hard to classify by genre when you see her live. That is likely because she is a multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter playing solo; by definition that makes genre hard to determine. When Callaghan tours with a nine piece band you can figure that out. For now, just accept her as a writer with a lovely voice who can play like a human metronome.

Mullin relocated to Atlanta from the U.K. (can you say “culture shock”?) and began work on her record.

“This is my first full length album it is coming out may first. It is twelve songs. The Life in full color title came from the collection of songs the theme of things from everyday life that people experience falling in love, falling out of love being overjoyed or really sad, those highs and lows of life,” she says. “It was recorded in 2010 and 2011 with Shawn and I had a fantastic time making it and getting to come out and play the songs live it has been great, real learning curve getting to go into the studio with him and watch him as a producer.”

Callaghan says she has been a huge fan of Mullins’ music for as long as she remembers. But seeing him work as a producer showed her a whole new side. The new record isn’t the first she produced but it is the first she thought of as an integral collection of songs.

“I’ve done EPs in past, five six seven songs I put out myself. This one because it was a full album I really thought about which songs are going to go on here and I have so many to choose from..” she says.

They started with 40 songs—a large portion, at least, of the songs Callaghan had written. They added a couple of songs she and Mullins worked on together.

Callaghan tours extensively and before songs are recorded they get played live.

“It is interesting because I have heard other artists say that when they play a song over and over and over again it can get monotonous but I quite like it,” says Callaghan. “That feeling when you play a song 200 times and suddenly it changes. I don’t know if it is the audience reaction or something feels different as you discover a new part of that song.”

Callaghan also feels at home on tour.

“I love touring. I love the studio side as well and all the creative part, creating a song.’ she says.

But playing live is what she really loves. Being on tour with Mullins has been a plus. When she plays with him she benefits from his fans and his past. Regardless of where or who Callaghan plays for she brings the same mindset.

“I’ve played some where there are five people in the room but it doesn’t matter whether there are five people or five hundred; I am going to have fun on stage. Hopefully the people will go home and say ‘I saw a good show tonight.’ Then I hope they go tell all their friends about it,” she says. “I know to be realistic in the way that the music business now is now to build it sustainably; get people to come out. Then they go home and tell their friends and the next time they come and see you.”

Picture
Callaghan tells a story before she plays one of her new songs. She talks about how she wrote a song for her husband, who moved to the USA with her shortly after their marriage. She played the song, Blue Eyes, for him and asked what he thought. She could tell something wasn’t quite right.

He then pointed out, “I have green eyes.”

The song now has a new title. Callaghan says he doesn’t bring this up as often as most men would.

“Yes, well…He is very understanding about being married to a songwriter and that these things happen. People come up to the CD table a lot and look at his eyes very intently and say ‘you’re the one with green eyes’.” says Callaghan.

As to her near future plans Callaghan says she plans to tour, tour, tour, for the next few months.

“I am going to play as many shows as possible to support the album coming out. More and more dates are being booked.” she says.

You can find out more information, and for awhile, get a free download at www.callaghansongs.com.

The Black Belles At The Empty Bottle In Chicago, February 15

2/16/2012

Picture
The Black Belles are currently on tour--for a little while. The band have a bit in common with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but much rawer, much more punk rock. They have energy, they are fun, they have an intensity that is regrettably absent from many rock bands today.

Of course a rock band full of lovely young ladies always has potential to succeed on some level even if they are not good. But that isn't The Black Belles. They back up their imagery and their schtick with solid rock n roll.

There is a little bit of The Nymphs (remember them?) and maybe a whiff of The Cranes in the band but, as with all good bands, they do put their own stamp on the sound.

The Black Belles self-titled debut was produced by Jack White. The record came out in November, 2011 and the band has toured since. They also appeared on the Steven Colbert show and were praised by Vogue (or so I am told, I don't subscribe to Vogue).

Holy Ghost! Jessica 6 At Double Door In Chicago, 2010

2/9/2012

_ “Team DFA” (aka Kate and David who seem to go to all the events featuring DFA artistts was back in action recently.   This time, we took in DFA recording artist   Holy Ghost! and opener Jessica 6, at Chicago’s Double Door.

By Kate Anthony. Photos by David DeSanto

_ Reflecting upon the show, one thing comes immediately to mind--Thank god for vocals.I know that sounds odd, but bear with me.

I get annoyed when people say a certain genre of music “all sounds the same.” This is especially true when they sat it about reggae-– one of my favorite kinds of music, and one that decidedly does not “all sound the same.”To this notion I simply say, if you listened to it more, you wouldn’t think so.

Therefore, I know this is going to sound hypocritical, but I think most of the “new-era disco” (my phrase, meaning music that sounds like the erstwhile techno / new wave fused with 70’s disco)  sounds an awful lot like.   I’m talking, to name a few:The Rapture, Chromeo, Friendly Fires, Cut Copy, and yes, Holy Ghost!

Mind you, I am not saying I don’t enjoy the music; I very much do.  But to me, after a while it all starts sounding kinda the same.  Except for the vocals, which is why I thanked god for them earlier.

For me, vocals are the one thing that can actually distinguish a band that otherwise employs standard-fare techniques. And let’s face it;the new-era disco bands really do employ some pretty familiar-sounding techniques.Again, not that I’m dissing them.I love the music.  Really.

What distinguished Jessica 6 the other night (and presumably, every night) is singer Nomi Ruiz. She is a sight to be seen, tall and thin with jet black hair, very skimpy black clothing and towering black boots. And her voice is, well, distinct. The band did a fine job supporting her and keeping the beats pounding. But really, what people are in it for when they’re watching Jessica 6 live is Nomi.

Picture
_ Can the same be said about Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel, the team that fronts Holy Ghost!?  Yes and no.Although neither of them is the romping, preening presence that is Nomi Ruiz, they more than held their own.  Granted, these guys are the sum total of Holy Ghost!, as opposed to simply being front men. But lead singer Alex did a decent job of moving around the stage. While it could hardly be called preening, he did fully engage the crowd.  Nick, admittedly less so – in fact, not at all.But then again, he was stuck behind the keyboards all night.

Speaking of that, taking a cue from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Holy Ghost! brings a full roster of real musicians – oooooh – with them onstage for their live shows (this night, borrowing Jessica 6’s drummer).  In addition to the ubiquitous keyboards, there were bass and electric guitars, and yes, an actual drum kit.

And thank god for that, too.Because I agree with Alex, who recently told the Dallas Observer how he feels about musicians who get onstage and stand behind computers the whole time;“Yeeeaaah, I’m not paying for that.”

There’s also no paying for Holy Ghost’s cover of the 80s Ministry classic, I Wanted to Tell Her. Recently recorded (and distributed for free, as so many of Holy Ghost!’s recordings are) this version features fellow DFA labelmates The Juan Maclean and singer Nancy Whang.True to the original yet still uniquely Holy Ghost!…

Oh, never mind.  You had me at “Ministry.”
