Jolly Boys are releasing a new record, Great Expectation, May 3, 2011. This may seem like just another announcement of a release but the legendary Jolly Boys haven’t released any new material since before Bill Clinton was President. The record is a collaboration between EOne Music and Geejam Recordings.
Twelve cover tracks were chosen for a “Mento” makeover. Mento is a precursor to reggae and ska and goes back 60 years plus. Jolly Boys were the big name in Mento back when…the 50s. Since then there have been different incarnations.
When recording some vintage Jolly Boys tracks the idea came up to take some rock tracks and give them the treatment. Included are songs from The Clash, The Stooges, The Stranglers (boy I hope it is Bring on the Nubiles), New Order and Amy Winehouse.
