Debashish Bhattacharya, master of the Kolkata slide guitar, is releasing his latest opus, Madeira. The release uses a number of traditional ragas from the 15th Century. This is work, however, that will appeal to traditionalists and fans of modern music as well. Bhattacharya is joined on the LP by his daughter, Anandi Bhattacharya, a vocalist and swarmandal player. The swarmandal is a 40 stringed Indian harp.
Bhattacharya, inventor of over 19 instruments, has three that are most used and most dear to him; the 24-string chaturangi, 14-string gandharvi and four-string lap steel ukulele, anandi. The last is named for his daughter.
Bhattacharya is also heading out on a short USA tour. Dates are below.
