Midge Ure Touring USA For First Time In Over A Decade

11/27/2012

Midge Ure is heading out on his first U.S. solo tour in over a decade this January. Dates are below. Ure’s last U.S. tour was in 2001 and his last with a full band was in 1985. Right The Stars will perform as Ure’s opening band and back him up during his set.

Ure is most remembered for his work with Ultravox but he was also part of both Visage and Thin Lizzy (how is THAT for contrasting styles?). Some may even recall that Ure was one of the principles behind the Band Aid single and Live Aid concerts.

Ultravox have also released their first record in over 25 years with Brilliant. You can also check out Ure’s biography, If I Was, as an ebook in 2013.

The tour will consist of Ure’s solo work (a new album is in the offing) and likely the odd Ultravox tune.

Picture
The Road Most Traveled, compiled by Chuck Ragan, is bands telling the stories of their lives on the road. Bands telling their stories include Samian, Social Distortion, Flogging Molly, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dropkick Murphys, many other musicians as well as bus drivers, tour managers and crew (these last three probably have the best stories...just guessing).

The stories are from all around the world and every chapter has a unique perspective and voice with stories ranging from the humerous and to near death experiences.

The book is available now at all the usual retailers and also at chuckraganmusic.com. You can get it as a book or ebook.

Jay Mazz & Threadhead Release Up Front and Center: New Orleans Music at the End of the 20th Century

Up Front and Center: New Orleans Music at the End of the 20th Century by writer, Jay Mazza, is out today via Threadhead Press. As the title suggests it is about music in New Orleans, specifically Jazz. Mazza has been a fixture at clubs, concerts and festivals for over 20 years.  Kermit Ruffins, trumpeter, provides the forward.

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is the glue holding the story together—the history of the festival is explored at length. There is analysis and anecdotes and also the history of other parts of the city’s musical history. Many of the musicians that are the focus are those who have been under-appreciated.

Yellow Bird Project, a Montreal-based arts organization, and illustrator Andy J. Miller joined forces to create The Indie Rock Poster Book.  The book consists of posters from 30 illustrators and inspired by indie rock songs. The book comes out May 7, 2011.

Proceeds benefit a variety of charities chosen by the musicians. Some of the songs inspiring posters are BonIver’s Skinny Love, Iron & Wine’s The Trapeze Swinger and more.

This effort follows the previous, and successful, Indie Rock Coloring Book.

Prints in the book are removable for framing. Or you can leave it as a book. Hell, buy two of them and frame one and keep the other one as a book The Yellow Bird Project began in 2006 and has been raising money for a variety of charities since then.

Turntabling.net  is heading out on a cross-country trek, Vinyl Road Rage Two.

August 12 proprietor, Joe Wallace, will hope in his vehicle (we assume it is a personal vehicle) and travel from indie record store to indie record store. The first of these efforts took place last year and was, in the main, a trip between Chicago and San Antonio.

This time out Wallace is heading from Chicago to New York City with stops at at LEAST nine record shops and probably more. He will also hit other places related to the music industry. Multiple blog updates daily.

Follow the madness at Turntablinng.net. And feel free to email Joe at jwallace(at)turntabling.net

Big Takeover Magazine, The Last Great Rock n Roll 'Zine Has A New And Improved Website

One of the longest, still-standing and best music magazines out there (maybe even the only one that is any good these days) is Big Takeover. And they have a new website. The website has been around for 13 years but (having been relaunched once before in 2004…) it is now new and improved.

www.bigtakeover.com

The categories are now easier to navigate and include; recordings, concerts, interviews and top ten. The site will also include an archive of shows from big takeover on breakthruradio.com.

I have been a fan of this magazine for more years than I can count. I haven’t bought a music magazine for I have NO idea how long—excepting only Big Takeover. Support them in print and online.
