Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Jody Stephens (Big Star), Mike Mills (REM), Matthew Sweet, M Ward and others are getting together to perform Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers, with its original string and wind orchestrations. The scores for these were recently unearthed.
Big Star was, initially, a studio project of Stephens and the late Alex Chilton. This isn’t the first time the record has been peformed. It was in December, 2010 in North Carolina. This show led to plans for another in NYC at 7 p.m. (doors at 6) on March 26 at Baruch Performing Arts Center (Baruch College), Mason Hall, 17 Lexington (enter on 23rd Ste between Lexington and 3rd). You can call the box office at 646-312-4085. Tickets are on sale at 11 a.m. Thurdsday, February 17 via Ticketweb. The show will include other Big star and Chris Bell songs.
In addition to Stephens, Blake, Mills, Sweet and Ward others who will perform include Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Tift Merritt, Will Rigby and Chris Stamey (the dBS) and the Lost in the Trees Orchestra. Profits will go to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and El Sistema NYC.
