Everyone from Urb to Fader to Dazed And Confused are singing the praises of Brooklyn’s Creep. The single for Days, video below, cam out January 25. The single has remixes by Deadboy and Azari & III. The video itself was directed by Fischerspooner’s Warren Fisscher. Creep is a duo consisting of Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard…DJ/Producers extraordinaire. A full length record is coming this year so keep your eyes and ears open fans of vaguely dark electronic soundscapes.

Tahiti 80, out of France, are releasing their new full-length, The Past, The Present, The Possible, soon. First, however they are releasing the Darlin EP (personally I would put an apostrophe after “darling” but then, maybe, it is a French word too).
A track from the EP, a remix by Detroit’s own, Jimmy Edgar, is included above. There is also a short US tour heading out fairly soon. U.S, Tour Dates-- 3/09: Chicago, IL @ The Abbey (11:30 PM) 3/10, New York, NY @ Mercury Lounge (11:00 PM) 3/13: San Francisco, CA @ Rickshaw Stop (10:45 PM) 3/14: Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour (10:00 PM) Catcher in the Rye Datarock are releasing a single, Catcher in the Rye. But it doesn’t reallllly sound like a single. It sounds like about three years work. It includes a designer toy which has: 110 bonus tracks, 1500 photos, 20 music videos and an hour of concert footage.
Those of you with kids may remember Datarock from being on Yo Gabba Gabba. Others may recall them from Coachella etc etc. This basically includes their entire catalog as a bonus on a single. This is an awesome concept. This is how music as a business survives, when bands and /or their marketing/PR henchmen (and henchwomen) come up with creative ways to add value to what they are selling. Bravo Datarock. You can hear the single above. If you like indie rock, dance with a funky flavor you are probably going to like Datarock… For more info head to datarockmusic.com photo by Guy ArochMonte Carlo by U.S. RoyaltyEquestrian by U.S. Royalty U.S Royalty are released their latest record, Mirrors, January 25th. We have posted on this before but they have provided two singles for your perusal, Equestrian and Monte Carlo. I think it is nice when the labels and bands give samples. If you like the music, buy it.
Or, at the very least, head out and see the band live if they come to your town. Hell, if you are close I am thinking ROAD TRIP. Also on this tour across the USA is Broken Records (on 4AD). 2.20.11 - Black Cat Backstage - Washington, D.C. 2.21.11 - North Star Bar - Philadelphia, PA 2.22.11 - Mercury Lounge - New York, NY 2.23.11 - The Rock Shop - Brooklyn, NY 2.24.11 - Brighton Music Hall - Boston, MA 2.26.11 - Schubas - Chicago, IL 2.27.11 - Triple Rock Social Club - Minneapolis, MN 3.02.11 - Tractor Tavern - Seattle, WA 3.03.11 - Mississippi Studios - Portland, OR 3.05.11 - Rickshaw Shop - San Francisco, CA 3.06.11 - The Satellite - Los Angeles, CA Joan As Police Woman’s latest record, The Deep Field, came out digitally today and comes out on CD and Vinyl (with a bonus track) April 12. The video below for, The Magic, is the first single from the record. You can purchase the record at www.joanaspolicewoman.com. The band has an eclectic list of collaborators and supporters including: Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow, Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainright, and Antony and the Johnsons. Not sure who have been collaborators and who is just a supporter. But I would love to hear any collaboration between Rufus Wainright and Scissor Sisters. Dog Years by Luke Rathbone Luke Rathborne is releasing an ep, I Can Be One / Dog Years (a split-EP or two eps in one…I don’t get it but then I am slow on the uptake) on March 8 on Dilettante Recordings.
The two ep approach is a sort of mental separation of songs with different themes into two eps…presented together. I actually do understand this but I wonder if the audience is going to see the same subtle differences the guy who wrote the songs does? But that is academic…and therefore very very boring. You can check out a track, Dog Years, above to get a bead on where Rathbone is coming from. You can also go to his website, lukerathbone.com, to hear more. The Smoking Popes are releasing, This Is Only A Test, on March 15 and plan a tour to support. As is often the case for March releases the tour starts in beautiful Austin, Texas as part of SXSW. Before the tour they will be playing live on WGN (the national broadcast).
The album was recorded in Chicago at Atlas Studios and produced by Matt Allison (Less Than Jake, Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms). The Smoking Popes formed in 1991, releasing records on a variety of Chicago labels before signing to Capital Records. The band broke up in 1998 but reformed for some one off shows, which was followed by a reformation that stuck in 2008 (when they released, Stay Down). You can hear their track, You Can Make The Sunrise, above. This track seems to impart rather intense power upon the listener. You can make the “sunrise”…not “sun rise”. Don’t get me wrong, either would be TOTALLY impressive but the former intimates a broader, ongoing and more creative sort of power. Jackie Bristow first started recording in Australia and later moved to Austin Texas. Her third record, Freedom, comes out February 15, 2011. She will also be touring with guitarist, Tommy Emmanuel. The record was made in Austin and Sydney.
One neat place she is playing is the Austin airport, the only airport I have ever been in with live entertainment. Bristow’s music has been in numerous Australian and New Zealand-made films and television shows. One track, This is Australia, won a tourism song competition and was used in a worldwide ad campaign. Hey, look, being a musician is a job too. How about you? I mean, what is not to like? It is Rock n Roll. Their latest video for, So Lonely, is below. You can hear more music, buy stuff and get a free download of their track, at the band website, www.thewhigs.com. It sounds pretty happy-go-lucky. |
