If you look closely at the detail below you will see that Remains Revisited is made up of tiny flowers. In fact, it is made up of 35,000 sculpted and hand cast urethane flowers. The piece may look like a painting from a distance but its more a wall sculpture, a mosaic.
Champeny, originally from Beloit, Wisconsin, and like many artists he wound up in New York City (after receiving his BA in Studio Art from Beloit College). He works in sculpture, painting and design. This work was at Scope but it wouldn't have been out of place at Design Miami. His work is sometimes portraiture, pop art-esque or even abstraction. But he adds something new to each of these things. Sure, it may be an American flag or a celebrity but the PROCESS here is wildly different from the cookie cutter regurgitation of Andy Warhol that seems to be everywhere.
It is well worth heading to www.kevinchampeny.com and the gallery site linked above.
