Mao Yan's My Student (2012) is a haunting piece. It has the feel of a cameo but on a grander scale. The cameo sort of image always brings a sort of melancholy to me. Cameo's remind me of people being remembered who are gone--loved ones, children.
And in this case perhaps a student. Gone doesn't imply death but rather absence.
That was very philosophical of me wasn't it?
Yan is a Chinese painter, born in Hunan. He studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has had solo exhibitions worldwide over the past 20 years.
