Moving On by Luisa Mesa (not sure if this one will be in the exhibit but it is an example of her work)
Luisa Mesa is having a solo exhibition of her multi-media art at Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery 1 Mayfair center 3390 Mayfair st ste 128 Coconut Grove . There is an opening reception on August 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Mesa, born in Havana and living in South Florida, is an artist whose work I first saw at Art Center South Florida. While many of the artists there “stood out” she did in particular. I am never sure why that is the case. But she explains her art as always beginning with repetition and layering, saying these are fundamental parts of her work. Every single piece begins this way. Do not take this to mean there is a “sameness” to the work either. Rather this foundation is part of a metaphor for the “interconnectedness of all things” (as the release for this exhibit put it—and I can think of no different way to say it).
She uses colors that, on the color wheel or in art class, might not seem to fit together, to complement one another but of course when Mesa puts them in context they do fit. As notes she works in a variety of media from enamel to digital images to resin and more.
