Lucien Freud passed away earlier this year. He was known for just these sorts of intimate drawings/paintings. Do not howl. These are typical of his drawings, NOT his paintings, which usually were "heavy" with paint and subdued in color. The comparisons I could make wouldn't be useful in learning about the man or his art. But in his case there was always a great deal written about him.
He was the grandson of Sigmund Freud and that might be a name that could cast a shadow (a positive one in this case) over the generations. This Freud, however, shone in his own field every bit as much as his grandpa. When you read up on him you will see many critics discussing how he changed modern portrait painting.
