Kent Dorn is from South Carolina and his piece, Asylum (2011) was shown at Pulse Miami by Freight + Volume (New York City). This is getting near the time where I stare dumbstruck at photos I took of marvelous pieces by artists like Dorn and resort to cribbing from the gallery website. Why do I start doing this? I have used the same adjectives too many times.
This work caught my eye, it has a perspective and a depth (literally) that is unique. The pieces are three dimensional but not because of any accordion vision (who popularized that a couple years ago? I would have remembered when I started posting this Art Basel week stuff). It is mixed media on canvas.
The color of Dorn’s work (in general as well as Asylum specifically) also leaps out at you. The piece is somewhere between reality and a cartoon, somewhere between sense and extrasense. Go see his work whenever you get a shot. He lives in Houston so if you are in that great Texan city be sure to keep an eye out for him.
