West, like a number of women artists of her era, used a masculine name in her working life. She was a student of Hans Hofmann. West was friends with a who's who of New York-based artists of the 1920s and 30s.
Speaking of such artists, Poousette-Dart, was a contemporary and friend of West. The piece above, Opaque Horizon, is acrylic on canvas. In person the piece is textured and looks almost plastic. It also has a much more contemporary feel than West's work.
