Hernan Bas is an A-list painter. I use the vernacular purposefully. Bas would not have to wait in line to get into the party. His work always bears one look, then another and another. Something about certain Bas works remind me of Matisse--certainly not the coloring. It may be the sort of cramped nature of the paintings or sometimes the different take on perspective.
This strange Matisse thing of mine doesn’t hold up with ALL of Bass’ paintings of course but have a look at, A Satanist On A Sunday, below and imagine a fauve palette. Other paintings by Bas are more fantastical and otherworldly.

Bas was born in Miami and went to the New World School of the Arts (don't cut arts education in Florida idiot politicians, please?). The gallery website says he now lives and works in Detroit. You would need to ask him why. Perhaps he is a Lions fan. Some may look askance at my referring to him as "A-list" because he is young and not fetching Wilfredo Lam money for his paintings. Being young is ok by me. Look at his other works on the gallery site.
