Larraz is originally from Havana and came to the USA in 1961. These pieces, at first glance have a realistic feel but they go beyond that; they all have a dreamy, fantastic quality (and not just the disappearing boat). Usually when the word "dreamy" comes into play it goes hand in hand with "blurry." This isn't the case here. These paintings (all oils on a large scale) are sharp and it is difficult to put a finger on where the realism ends and the dream begins. They are large pieces, ranging from 38 by 15 inches (96.5 cm by 129.5 cm) to 78 by 60 inches (198.1 cm by 154.2 cm). They range in cost from $80,000 and $160,000. They have an otherworldly, mythic quality and are unmistakable in style.
