Monica Jahan Bose's latest exhibition runs March 31 to April 21, 2017 at  Civilian Art Projects (Washington D.C.). There will be a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 31.

Jahan Bose's work is often part performance, part installation and always have a point, are always aimed to enlighten and educate.

This exhibit includes new paintings that arise from a number of performance and climate art actions. The title comes from a Bengali song.. There have been recent performances in Miami, Washington DC, Honolulu, Paris and Katahali Village (Bangladesh).

All of these performances used the coconut as a symbol of climate resilience. This new symbol uses the artist's use of the sari. Her "performance pieces" are not just art but community activism.

This exhibit is accompanied by a new publication, Rising Up to Climate Change: Storytelling with Saris. This is funded, in part, by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (part of the NEA). Bose's pieces employing sari's have been ongoing for many years.

In addition to the opening there will be a Sari Workshop & Sing-A-Long at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14 and an Artist Talk/Closing Reception at 3 p.m. Saturday April 21.

Facebook Releases "Open Form" A Book Celebrating Five Years Of Their Artist In Residence (AIR) Program

11/3/2017

The book features 225 origina art installations that were part of AIR. It also features an introductory essay from Natasha Boas on the intersection between tech and art as well as the evolution of counterculture and cyberculture. Facebook releases Open Form, a book celebrating five years of their Artist in Residence (AIR) program.

The book is a work of art in itself. You might be afraid to open it. No way you want a coffee stain or crumbs to get on this. Open Form calls to mind the catalog from many years of Art Basel Miami, excepting that the binding and presentation is more elegant. They really went all in on this book and in the selection of these artists. The curators are to be
congratulated.

AIR began at Facebook's headquarters and is now global. There are four dedicated curators in the four regional areas Facebook has an office (Chicago, Dublin, Sao Paulo and Seattle). The point isn't just to display art but to create a connection to the artists and offer local artist's a chance to make new, large scale art--notably site-specific installations.

You can check out video profiles of the artists participating HERE. You can purchase a copy of the book for $85 HERE.

44 Flood's "Tome 2-Melancholia" Kickstarter Funds In One Day

6/27/2013

Picture
44 Flood is a fairly new publisher of art books etc based in Chicago. They feature work by artists such as Menton 3, Ben Templesmith, Christopher Ulrich, David Stoupakis and literally dozens of other artists--in every medium from paint to song to food to design etcetera.

Their new project, Tome 2-Melancholia, funded at Kickstarter in less than 24 hours (and has current pledges of over $36,000).

The first Tome book was a magnificent work with an ever expanding group of artists (as the project garnered more financial support). Like that project this one features music, art prints and the Tome 2 book (plus a companion book, Explicitus Ex Liber 2).
Let them explain the details HERE.
At this point the project is funded but as it progresses (there is a month and a half left) you can be sure more will be added to the project. If you purchase via a Kickstarter pledge you will also save money on the price of the book. Many of the prints and extras in the Kickstarter will be available only via Kickstarter pledges.

Another reason why crowdfunding is so great despite the fact that it has become something for angry hipsters to sneer at (go wax your ridiculous mustaches and iron your ironic t-shirts).

Raw Vision, A Magazine Of Outsider Art; 22 Years Of Bringing Outsiders "Inside"

10/25/2011

Picture
Raw Vision is an art magazine dedicated to "outsider" art. And outsiders of any sort are near and dear to me.

I wanted, in this section, to call people's attention to art magazines and other publications that you really should know about--if you have an interest in art.

Raw Vision began publishing in 1989 with the aim of bringing the unknown geniuses of the art world some public attention. And I do mean geniuses. I wish there were more publications like this in other areas like music. How many geniuses do we never hear or see. But I digress.

Often what you see in galleries and museums is art that comes out of higher art education and there is nothing wrong with that. To be sure there are galleries and museums who do feature outsider art but more feature artists with a high level of art education or who fit into certain...paradigms. The outsiders featured in Raw Vision make their own rules, unencumbered by conventions, styles, artistic fads, worrying about what is "hot" and will get you noticed.

They are artists because they have to do it.

I don't want to put too fine a point on this because I am a huge fan of many artists who have advanced education. Some of those artists pride themselves on breaking rules as well. To me, it is about exposure. Raw Vision gives artists who are outside the magical circle of museum and institutional art a voice and they get people's eyes on these artists.

You can find out more on Raw Vision HERE. Likewise you can pick up a subscription there. You can also do what I do and grab issues at your local bookstores. Most places with a decent selection of magazines will have it
