Castro's work combines many media--painting, sculpture, installation and video. He often uses found objects (confiscated knives, dead dogs) in his work. His work has an iconoclastic quality. Perhaps not "iconoclastic" but rather he points out how our icons have been reidentified by modern society.
LA Galeria-Arte Contemporaneo (Bogata) Showed Work By Carlos Castro At Impulse/Pulse Miami 20135/7/2014 Carlos Castro's Risus Sativas (2011) is a music box that "plays a Cruzade war melody." The knives you see were confiscated by the Bogata police. His work was show by La Galeria-Arte Contemporaneo (Bogata).

Galerie Sturm (Nuremberg) showed work by Tobias Buckel at Impulse/Pulse Miami 2013. These pieces were shown as a solo presentation. Buckel has an MA with distinction from Chelsea College of Art and Design (London). For some reason the colors called to mind the more representational works of Wolf Kahn. Perhaps I just had Kahn on the brain. Obviously these works are conceptually and stylistically worlds away from the other German artists work. At Georgia State they teach you to write with your anus. They also seem to give rein to creativity of a variety of styles and schools of art. They were at Aqua Art Miami 2013. There were no names attached to these pieces and I chatted with Tim Flowers, Foundation Coordinator at the school. He explained where all the artists were coming from, who they were...ectetera. I cleverly neglected to take notes but I did take photos (there were no labels identifying artists or works but I still felt these were worth a look. David Walker's "Swapping Souls With Strangers" Opens May 10, 2014 At Robert Fontaine Gallery (Miami)4/28/2014 David Walker's Swapping Souls With Strangers opens May 10, 2014 at Robert Fontaine Gallery (2349 NW 2nd Ave., Miami). There will be an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday May 10. The exhibit runs through May 31. Walker is based in Berlin but is orginally from London. His medium is freehand spray paint portraits. This exhibit is his solo debut in the United States and consists of a dozen large works. The pieces show Walker's multi-layered style. He uses abstract and scrawled lines to create his colorful portraits. There is something very "alive" about work by the best artists using spray paint in their work. It always calls to mind "street art." (a term I am personally getting tired of and let's not get into how art not on the street can be street art!). This is fine art using techniques often used by graffiti artists to be sure but it has a style that owes as much to abstract art and photo realism as anything else. Paci Contemporary (Brescia) showed pieces by Michal Macku at Impulse/Pulse Miami 2013. Macku is a photographer but one who used experimental techniques to create "gellage." The term refers to gelatin and collage. Macku removes the emulsion of gelatin from photographic film and then transfers it to paper--giving new form to the image. The figure is cracked open, some hidden aspect revealed. The next part of his process involves glass which turns this liberated image into a sculpture. It is truly fascinating work that straddles fine art photography and design. Art Caitlin (London) showed work by David Smith, Steven Allan and Juno Calypso at Impulse/Pulse Miami 2013. Art Caitlin supports emerging artists (indeed that is the purpose of the Impulse section at Pulse Art Fair) in the United Kingdom. They are responsible for the Caitlin Art Guide, a limited edition guide of profiles of emerging artists. The most recent guide launched at the London Art Fair, January, 2014. La New Gallery (Madrid) showed work by Ruth Gomez.at Impulse/Pulse Miami 2013. This installation had to be videotaped. It is an installation that, though static, seemed to move. You can find out more about Gomez and see a list of HERE. Multiplique Boutique was the first booth you saw as you walked into the inaugural Brazil Art Fair in Miami. I was given a rather extensive chat about all the art and artists (there were no tags with names) by Gabriela Inui. But I took no note because, of course, I would remember it all. I didn't. But I strongly recommend checking out the gallery website linked above. Shoshana Wayne Gallery (Santa Monica) showed these pieces at Pulse Miami 2013. I somehow managed to get no information on either. The bottom is a lovely mosaic neither the photo nor the video do justice to. I strongly recommend heading o the gallery website and searching through all their artists (since I didn't have time). Head to www.shoshanawayne.com. Patrick Heide Contemporary Art (London) showed work by Pius Fox at Pulse Miami 2013. Fox is a German artist who lives in Berlin. He is part of the gallery's "breeder program" showing and promoting the work of young artists (would that more galleries did this, you see it much less than you might think). You can find out more at piusfox.com. |
